Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced full-time Specialty or Associate Specialist Doctor to join Cygnet Newton House, a dedicated facility for supporting men pursuing long-term recovery. This opportunity comes with competitive compensation and the chance to progress to Consultant level through our prestigious Career and Education Support (CESR) programme.

As part of our innovative rehabilitation services, your role will involve:

  • Providing psychiatric care in a 21-bed high support inpatient facility (Level 2) and a community rehabilitation service (Level 1).
  • Working closely with a first-class multidisciplinary team, including occupational therapists, psychologists, vocational trainers, and mental health nurses.
  • Gaining hands-on experience under supervision, with focus areas including admission assessments, mental health intervention plans, and (Section 117) legislative support to enhance discharge pathways.
  • Utilising our ezCare pathway solutions to enhance patient management and improve workflow efficiency.

Core Responsibilities

Your principal duties include:

Clinical Delivery

  • Conduct initial clerking and mental state exams for newly admitted patients to develop robust treatment plans.
  • Perform psychiatric assessments, implement investigations, and provide psychiatric care for all inpatients under Consultant supervison.
  • Collaborate with ward nursing staff, mental health professionals, and external agencies to provide seamless care.
  • Participate in weekly ward rounds and multidisciplinary discussions, including:
    • CPA (Cدودmentaary Probation Appro))assment Panel reviews
    • Section 29/Tribunal hearings (if applicable)
    • (Section 117) Aftercare Planning Applications

Patient & Team Care

  • Maintain comprehensive clinical records of psychiatric assessments and interventions.
  • Develop and prepare discharge summaries in line with national and Cygnet guidelines.
  • Engage in critical pathways to optimise outcome management and aftercare logistics.
  • Ensure effective communication with:
    • Patients, relatives, carers, and ward teams
    • Medical directors, regulators, and external stakeholders

Safety & Compliance

  • Attend mandatory training courses, including:
    • Basic & Intermediate Life Support (BLS/ILS)
    • Breakaway Training / Powerful Move Assistatory (PMVA) for safe movement interventions
    • Infection control, Health & Safety policies

On-Call Support

  • Actively participate in duty doctor rotations to provide additional medical or psychiatric coverage as required.

Essential & Desirable Qualifications

Qualifications & Certification

  • Fully GMC-registered with an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) degree or equivalent.
  • Completed or nearing completion of Core Psychiatry Training (CPT) in General Adult or Rehabilitation Psychiatry.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and Code of Practice.
  • Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and effective interpretation of consent.
  • Familiarity with ancillary supports like rehabilitation technique, (Section 117 Aftercare Principles), and vocational placement coordination.
  • MRCPsych member or equivalent qualification (if not currently, evidence of clear pathway progression).
  • Active member in (or prospective member) of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Non-Clinical Skills

  • Exceptional communication skills for qualitative assessment, treatment planning, and handovers.
  • Proven ability to work independently or collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Continued professional development (CPD) commitment.
