The Acute Medicine Department is pleased to offer a substantive Trust SAS Specialty Doctor post to work full time across the specialty. The post holder will have experience and expertise in Acute Medicine and enjoy working as part of an integrated front door multi-disciplinary team to deliver fast paced, evidence based care.
Acute Medicine at the Royal United Hospital centres around a 13 bedded direct GP assessment area (DAA) and a 25-bedded Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), located next to and operating closely with the Emergency Department. In addition to the MAU and SDeC, the acute medicine team are also responsible for patients in the 18-bedded Medical Short Stay ward (MSS). There is day-to-day supervision by the Consultants in Acute Medicine. 15 SHOs/F2s and 1 F1 are assigned to the acute medicine team at any one time; this team manages the acute take from Monday to Friday and also provides ward cover for all medical patients in the hospital overnight with assistance from the ward based medical teams.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as a key part of the medical team in Acute Medicine providing consistent senior medical cover to SDEC, MAU and MSS. They will use their good general medical knowledge and ability to supervise the acute medical take at STR level, working without direct supervision where appropriate and supervising junior medical staff. SDEC shifts may include early or late shifts, and most clinical days will begin with 8am handover. Morning and afternoon ward rounds on MAU and MSS will be standard work as part of the DCC of this role, and the post holder will show leadership, make decisions, organise ward rounds and chair board rounds. The role will have opportunities for service development through audit and quality improvement projects. The post holder will contribute, as part of a team, to core activities such as clinical governance and teaching/training.

The post holder will be part of the weekend rota providing post take ward rounds to MAU and MSS, currently at a frequency of 1:10. This will not be additional hours but managed as part of the weekly rota with week days off.

Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Experience in an acute speciality at STR level (or equivalent outside UK)
Desirable criteria
- Intention to specialise in Acute Medicine.
Ability
Essential criteria
- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties
- Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
