Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care – Permanent Role

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust (SaTH)

About the Role

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust (SaTH) is seeking a permanent Specialty Doctor (SpR) in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care for a role split between:

  • Princess Royal Hospital (Telford) – for on-call commitments
  • Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (Shrewsbury) – for normal working hours

Your responsibilities will span both sites, covering elective theatre sessions, daytime emergency theatres, obstetric theatres, delivery suites, and on-call duties in the Intensive Care Unit (ITU/HDU).

This high-paced, clinically demanding role requires expertise in: ✔ Acute patient assessment and management ✔ Leadership in ITU/HDU supervision ✔ Supporting junior medical staff and medical students ✔ Adhering to national and local clinical quality targets ✔ Collaborating in a multi-professional team

Core requirement: Commitment to the on-call rota, with 24/7 accountability for patient care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Practice & Patient Care
    • Lead and support elective theatre sessions, with oversight from spell-specialist consultants
    • Provide on-call coverage for ITU/HDU, including supervision of resident doctors in emergency theatres/obstetric theatres
    • Ensure continuity of care by following patients throughout clinical pathways
    • Develop advanced clinical skills, with a focus on critically ill patient assessment and management
    • Manage unpredictable emergencies as part of direct clinical workload

  • Medical Education & Support

    • Mentor novice resident doctors and medical students, fostering trainable competency and clinical competence
    • Contribute actively to training programmes, education, and professional development within the trust
  • Quality & targets

    • Deliver agreed national and local clinical quality targets in alignment with SaTH’s strategic priorities
    • Participate in audits, CPD activities, and research (1 Supporting Professional Activity/week)
  • Team Collaboration

    • Demonstrate excellent teamwork, adapting to high-pressure environments with professionalism and empathy
    • Engage effectively with multi-disciplinary teams (surgeons, nurses, ward teams, etc.)

Detailed Structure – Job Plan & Expectations

A formal job plan will be agreed within three months of appointment, aligned with the Clinical Director and the Medical Director.

Full-Time Commitments

  • A 10-programmed activity (PA) week is the basis for employment (scaled proportionately for part-time roles).
    • 9 PAs = Direct clinical work, including:

      • Predictable & emergency theatre sessions
      • ITU/HDU coverage
      • Maternity/obstetric work
      • Tailored patient management
    • 1 SPA = Professional development, covering:

      • Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
      • Training of juniors
      • Research/peer-reviewed projects
      • Audit participation

Flexibility & Reviews

  • Diarios (daily scheduling tools) will support PA allocation.
  • The workload model is revisited annually to reflect trust demands.
  • Part-time requests will undergo personalised discussion to modify job scope.
