Specialty Doctor (ST3+ equivalent) – Colorectal Surgery
Location: Ysbyty Gwynedd & Llandudno General Hospital
About the Role
Applications are invited for the position of Specialty Doctor (ST3+), focusing on General and Colorectal Surgery at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).
The post holder will contribute to a multidisciplinary team delivering General and Colorectal surgical services—including outpatient and inpatient care—across two hospitals.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Supporting a high-quality colorectal service focused on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Developing expertise in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Colonoscopy.
- Collaborating with a Robotic Surgery team in theatre procedures.
- Training in a recognised IS&T (Intercollegiate Surgical Training) programme.
The department at Ysbyty Gwynedd, an approved training unit, attracts a competitive intake of trainees. BCUHB fosters structured training aligned with HEIW standards, resembling a typical Specialty Doctor role (ST3–6).
Key Responsibilities
- Share responsibility for the care of General and Colorectal patients, ensuring proper diagnosis and treatment.
- Deliver teaching, examination, and accreditation duties through local and national postgraduate engagement.
- Participate in medical and clinical audit.
- Support ongoing research (within clinical capacity).
- Provide outpatient consultations, clinical supervision, and daily ward coordination.
- Contribute to Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and clinic meetings.
- Cover the General Surgery mid-grade 1:8 Admissions Duty (non-resident for nights and weekends), with additional independent duties when appropriate.

Post-Detailed Requirements
Training & Experience
Essential:
- Complete employment history (no gaps).
- At least 48 months’ surgical experience, excluding foundation modules.
- Broad exposure to General Surgery.

Desirable:
- Prior experience in Colorectal and/or Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.
- Capacity to perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
- GI endoscopy training (upper and lower).
Knowledge & Qualifications
Essential:
- Full GMC registration.
- MRCS/FRCS certification (or equivalent path).
- UK/EEA work permit compliance or visa eligibility.
Professional Skills
General Abilities (Essential):
- General surgical skills fitting the role's requirements.
- Ability in supervising junior staff (medical/nursing).
- Judgement and communication: Knowing when to seek guidance.
- Clinical knowledge application.
- Legible & accurate clinical note-taking.
- Oral communication for safe, effective patient interactions.
- Patient engagement in self-care.
- Familiarity with safe clinical interviewing, empathetic patient/relative communication.
- Basic IT literacy.
Add-ons (Desirable):
- Experience in General Surgery Emergency On-Call (middle-grade level).
- Diverse clinical exposure outside primary sub-specialty.
- Colorectal or advanced laparoscopic expertise.
