Job Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic Emergency Physician to join our team in Wrexham to cover a period of maternity leave on a fixed term basis. Given that this is a short-term fixed term appointment, it would be advantageous for the applicant to have experience of working in a UK NHS Emergency Department in order to maximise the ability to robustly integrate into working at a senior level in this busy Emergency Department.
The department sees around 65,000 new patients a year (approximately 20% paediatric).
The current medical staff consists of 11 WTE Consultants, 10 Specialty Doctors, 3-4 Higher Specialist Trainees, 2 Intermediate EM trainees (ST3s), 12 Junior doctors, 2 FY1s and 3 ACPs/ trainee ACPs and 1 Physicians Associate. We pride ourselves on having established working practices that provide extended shop floor hours in a way that is sustainable long-term, and also on our continued ability to recruit and retain our ‘middle grade’ Specialty Doctor tier when there is a national shortage. We also have Emergency Nurse, Cardiac Nurse, and Physiotherapy Practitioners working in the department and an excellent 24-hour Psychiatric Liaison service. We provide a senior-led service for adults and children including major trauma as a Trauma Unit, our designated Trauma Centre being more than 45 minutes away. We also have a separate area for assessment and treatment of children.
Main duties of the job
The emergency department was completed in early 2010. It offers:
- A large 4-bay resuscitation room, including a dedicated paediatric bay.
- 21 fully monitored and centrally networked Majors area.
- 7 further monitored cubicles, as well as 4 additional cubicles, and 3 examination rooms.
- Monitored dedicated Paediatric Wing, with separated waiting areas from the main awaiting room with dedicated paediatric nurses.
- A separate urgent treatment and minors areas, including a separate waiting area, all separate from the main department, including an eye examination room.

Excellent relationships with colleagues in other specialties, combined with the high level of senior involvement, mean that we have a low rate of hospital admission and functional services for management of chest pain, arrhythmias, DVT, head injury, soft tissue infection and many other diagnoses using our Clinical Decision Unit. We also carry out over 300 procedures under sedation every year, including children.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Successful applicants will have a job plan identical to the current post-holders which includes clear demarcation between clinical duties and protected SPA time. The contracted duties are for 44 hours (11 sessions), of which 9 sessions are DCC and 2 are SPA. There is no on-call commitment.
The current rota is 1 in 4 weekends (either 9am-5pm or 5pm-1am) and nights. You will be required to work one evening shift during the week.
Due to the flexible nature of the rota, there is ample opportunity to take study and professional leave as well as develop any special interests, and this is fully supported within the department and the Health Board.

Essential Criteria
- Full Registration with the General Medical Council.
- Minimum of four years (full time or equivalent) in postgraduate employment in the UK or equivalent EEA training. At least two years employment must be in the relevant specialty of Emergency Medicine, or recognised equivalent training (this is defined as the successful completion of the Foundation programme, followed by either successful completion of ST1 and ST2 or CT1 and CT2 or as a FTSTA or its recognised equivalent).
