Specialty Doctor in Gastroenterology
Specialty Doctor in Gastroenterology Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board – Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor
Starting from August 2026, on a full-time (10 sessions per week) permanent basis.
Nestled between Snowdonia National Park and Anglesey’s stunning coastline, this location offers picturesque beaches, lakes, and mountains – an ideal setting for outdoor enthusiasts and those passionate about adrenaline sports.

Main Duties
The successful candidate will:
- Support the gastrointestinal (GI) services, including:
- Inpatient care (30-bedded Gastroenterology ward)
- Outpatient clinics
- Endoscopy unit (including Open Access Gastroscopy)
- Stay current with advancements in the specialty
- Participate in audit and postgraduate meetings
- Engage in research, with opportunities to contribute to high-quality conference submissions

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- MRCP Part 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration
- ALS (Advanced Life Support) certification
Desirable:
- ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)
- Postgraduate qualification in Gastroenterology
Knowledge
Essential:
- Competencies in Gastroenterology tailored to the level of experience
- Progress toward PACES (International Postgraduate Medical Qualification)

Experience
Essential:
- At least 4 years of full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent part-time/flexible experience), including:
- ≥2 years in a specialty training programme in Gastroenterology or as a fixed-term specialty trainee
Desirable:
- Experience in audit or research
Skills
Essential:
- Proficiency in general medical/endoscopy procedures relevant to experience
- Ability to write clear, concise notes and clinical histories
- Supervisory skills to train junior staff
Desirable:
- Strong computer literacy (for medical systems/documentation)
Additional Requirements
Essential:
- Adaptability to meet changing service demands
- Resilience to work under pressure
- Capacity to teach and mentor junior medical staff in both General Medicine and Gastroenterology
Desirable:
- Travel flexibility—Welsh Health Board geographical spread may require multi-site attendance for clinics.
