Consultant Psychiatrist (Specialty Doctor) – Adult Mental Health Services – Arfon

Job Overview

The adult mental health services in Arfon collaborate with Gwynedd Social Services, the Third Sector, and partnership agencies to deliver a comprehensive service for individuals with mental health needs within the region. The role is governed by the Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010, requiring adherence to its requirements.

As the 1.0 WTE Specialist Doctor, you will provide patient-centred recovery-based care in secondary care services within the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). The CMHT is supported by occupational therapists and psychologists, aiding resilience and wellbeing for individuals with common mental health (MH) problems. Collaboration with primary care, GP clusters, third sector, and local authority agencies will enable a whole-community asset approach and trauma-informed care model of social prescribing.

⚠️ Note: The role may close early due to a high volume of applications.

The current medical provision for Mental Health Services in Arfon is covered by 1.0 WTE Specialist Doctors, aligned with the CMHT, responsible for the following supervised clinics:

  • S117 patients,
  • Clozapine clinic,
  • Lithium clinic,
  • Depot clinics.

These patients fall under Part II of the Mental Health Measure. Care coordination is undertaken by CPNs, Social Workers, and Occupational Therapists in the team, supported by weekly secondary care team meetings where referrals are discussed for patient allocation.

The Health Board also coordinates:

  • NHS services for general practitioners (GP practices),
  • NHS services by dentists, opticians, and pharmacies,
  • Mental Health Services provided by the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Division.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Clinically Supervised Clinics:

  • S117 affair coordination,

  • Clozapine follow-up and monitoring,

  • Lithium management,

  • Long-acting injectable depot medications.

Restoring or maintaining clinical supervision for the purposes of maintaining registration (required under General Medical Council, GMC, standards).

Provide patient-centred primary, secondary, and NHS treatment plans in line with:

  • Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010,

  • NICE Guidelines and clinical best practice.

Collaborative Approach: Engage with implement social prescribing approaches, whole-community asset-based care, and trauma-informed care through GP clusters, third sector, and partnership agencies.

Interface with other outpatient services, e.g., third sector mental health services and primary GP preventive and specialist health care services.

Maintains a clinical workload based on arfon specialist legislative duties and authorisations in line with wider secondary care resources.


Person Specification

Professional – Essential Criteria

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC);
  • Minimum of four years (full-time or equivalent) in postgraduate training within the UK or equivalent EEA national training standards.

  • Endorsement as equivalent within training by:
    • Foundation training approved by the.ac.uk Foundation Programme Directorate, followed by:
      • Completion of ST1 and ST2 in relevant accredited programmes;
      • OR completion of CT1 and CT2 as a FTSTA or recognised equivalent within training in the UK or EEA.

Desirable Criteria

  • Additional qualification in related specialty postgraduate programmes.
  • MRCPsch qualification.
  • Section 12(2) amended approval.

Experience – Essential Criteria

  • General medical skills, including:
    • Modern behavioural and communication techniques,
    • Mental health functional physical disorder assessment,
    • Clozapine monitoring and prescribing skills.
  • Mental health skills:
    • Pharmacological treatment for:
      • Benzo supplements within Liam guideline consultancy,
      • Grande departure, high dose atypical antipsychotics,
      • Anxiolytics, and Mood stabilisers (including Lithium and Valproate).
    • Psychological treatment options covering:
      • Cognitive behavioural principles,
      • Problem-solving treatments,
      • Early Recovery Principle principles,
      • Would learning principles (in compliance with the WMH guideline),
      • Reports and case management of least-restrictive alternative bottom reports.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in substance misuse management, including the use of tiafine and support groups,
  • Experience in psychological therapies, including Delivery of treatment, guidance and EMTDR,
  • Experience in general practice.
