Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine – Fixed Term (Until August 2027)

Location: Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast

Key Details

  • Salary: NHS Specialty Doctor (2021 contract) – £61,542 to £99,216 per annum (pro rata, dependent on experience) + 5% Availability Supplement
  • Hours: 10 PAs (40 hours) per week, with a 1 in 5 non-resident on-call commitment Part-time or job share opportunities considered.
  • Contract: Fixed term until August 2027 (optional extension by mutual agreement)
  • Closing Date: 23rd April 2026
  • Interview Date: Friday 1st May (pm session)
  • Start Date: June 2026

About the Role

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the Specialty Doctor in Palliative Medicine will provide essential medical support, assessments, and inpatient care at Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast. Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Working with the Community and Day Procedure Teams
  • Participation in teaching and management activities
  • Encouragement to undertake audits, quality improvement, and clinical excellence initiatives
  • Education and supervision provided for applicants with or without prior palliative medicine experience

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver holistic palliative care to hospice inpatients and communities
  • Assessment and treatment aligned with best practice in palliative medicine
  • Teaching and mentoring of healthcare professionals and students
  • Collaboration on research, audits, and service development to enhance clinical standards
  • Participation in team-based decision-making and governance

Requirements

Essential

✔ GMC registration and eligibility to practice ✔ Completion of at least 4 years of full-time postgraduate training, including 2 years in relevant acute specialities (or equivalent demonstrated experience and competencies) ✔ MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification ✔ Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork

Desirable

🔹 A full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle (desirable for wider service coverage) 🔹 Previous palliative medicine experience (not essential – full training offered)
