Specification Sales Manager


Position: Remote - Travel across Northern England Region | Permanent | Competitive Salary plus benefits

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including building owners, operators, developers, consultants, and contractors, to position Armstrong’s products as the Basis of Design (BoD) in high-value projects across UK commercial and industrial markets.
  • Engage proactively with customers to:
    • Understand technical and commercial needs
    • Uncover new business opportunities
    • Influence bid criteria for early-stage Armstrong solutions integration in civil engineering, district energy, and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Target priority sectors: commercial design-build, healthcare, industrial, district energy, and data centre projects.
  • Leverage government-funded programmes, sustainability mandates, and energy-efficiency focus areas.
  • Represent Armstrong at industry conferences, CPD sessions, and trade shows to build brand credibility with decision-makers.

National Leadership

  • Develop deep relationships with key national clients, driving BoD specification and early engagement.
  • Provide end-to-end technical and commercial support throughout project lifecycles, ensuring long-term customer satisfaction.
  • Distill and share customer insights to refine national strategy, business goals, and competitive positioning.

Product Knowledge & Sales Strategy

  • Familiarise stakeholders with the entire product portfolio, including pumps, HVAC solutions, digital technologies, and energy-efficient systems, through technical storytelling and consultative selling.
  • Develop quarterly sales plans, KPIs, and competitive strategies aligned to regionally driven growth targets.
  • Apply technical expertise to guide specification decisions, secure projects, and expand market share in priority sectors.

Administrative & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate CRM records for contacts, opportunities, pipeline activity, and performance tracking.
  • Monitor and report on market trends, competitor activity, and emerging projects in real time.
  • Submit bi-weekly activity reports, achieving transparent progress metrics for performance analysis.
  • Identify and escalate actors, wins, and upcoming revenue opportunities.

Team Collaboration & Development

  • Partner seamlessly with engineering, marketing, customer service, and senior leadership teams, ensuring both project and customer insights are shared effectively.
  • Contribute to cross-functional initiatives to strengthen Armstrong’s regional presence and long-term vision.
  • Engage with trade associations and professional forums to deepen industry expertise and influence vision.

What We’re Looking For


Education & Experience

  • Recognised degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or comparable technical or business qualifications.
  • Substantial experience in technical mechanical specification sales, application engineering, business development, or related fields across:
    • HVAC, hydronic systems, district energy, pumping, commercial infrastructure, critical facilities, or data hall specialities.
  • Proven track record in BoD positioning for large-scale projects (RIBA Stages 1–4), including:
    • Analysis of operational resilience/resilience, energy efficiency, sustainability objectives.
    • End-user specification manual and wielding relationships with architects, developers, facility operators, and consultants.
  • Hands-on experience in:
    • Asset management systems integration
    • Energy management/stage assessments in infrastructure.
  • Track record of working in cross-functional teams, delivering measurable relationship-driven commercial growth.

Mobility: 50–60% field travel requirement. Must hold a UK full driving licence with an owned vehicle.


Technical Skills

  • Deep mechanical/energy system expertise, particularly relating to:
    • Pumps, heat transfer, network distribution, critical building cooling consolidation, sustainability technologies.
  • Scholas application in construction projects, from concept to delivery: design, specification, and smart installation support intelligence support.
  • Advanced technical proficiency in product knowledge, jargon-armoured brochures, and profitability analysis within commercial infrastructure.
  • CRM master/mastering including pipeline forecasting, predictive territory planning, and sales intelligence reporting.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills: Presentations, technical sessions, client interactive videos, and project execution communication.
  • Data-driven global view of technical opportunities, sales performance, observer-led marketing, competitors, adjacent markets, and ways to succeed working at Armstrong today.
