Speech and Language Therapist Lead
Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist – BHR Neurodevelopmental Service
Job Overview
The Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership for the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) team within the Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge (BHR) Neurodevelopmental Service.
The post holder will:
- Lead the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based assessment and intervention for children and young people with neurodevelopmental needs, including autism and complex communication difficulties.
- Maintain a specialist clinical caseload while advancing service development, workforce leadership, and quality improvement.
- Ensure safe, effective and person-centred care across integrated neurodevelopmental pathways, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical & Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide professional, clinical and operational leadership for the SLT provision within the BHR Neurodevelopmental Service.
- Work closely with the Assistant Director and multidisciplinary clinical leads to ensure safe, evidence-based service delivery for children and young people.
- Lead service development and transformation, contributing to integrated neurodevelopmental pathways that support:
- Children and young people with autism
- Developmental language disorder
- Complex communication needs
- Design and implement systems, processes, and service models to enhance access, quality, and outcomes across health, education, and community settings.
Workforce Leadership & Development
- Provide line management and professional leadership to the SLT team, including:
- Effective recruitment, induction, supervision, appraisal, and performance management.
- Workforce development and ensuring compliance with professional, organisational, and safeguarding policies.
- Foster a positive team culture and promote continuous professional development.

Clinical Consultancy & Expertise
- Maintain an advanced clinical caseload, delivering specialist assessment, differential diagnosis, and intervention for children and young people with complex communication difficulties.
- Utilise highly developed clinical reasoning skills to:
- Develop evidence-based treatment plans.
- Provide expert advice to families, schools, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to Education, Health and Care (EHCP) assessments and provide specialist reports when required.
Collaborative & Strategic Engagement
- Work collaboratively with:
- Health, education, social care, and voluntary sector partners to ensure integrated care planning.
- Represent the service in local, Trust-wide, and external forums.
- Contribute to strategic developments aligned with:
- National policy
- SEND reforms
- Local priorities
Service Quality & Governance
- Oversee service performance, quality assurance, and clinical governance, including:
- Audit, service evaluation, and risk management.
- Policy development and quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitoring activity and performance data.
- Supporting key performance indicators (KPIs) and service reporting.
Training, Innovation & Research
- Lead the development and delivery of specialist training programmes.
- Support research and innovation, ensuring evidence-based practice across the workforce.
- Contribute to raising standards of care for children and young people.

Probationary Period
- Subject to a probationary period (unless exempt as an internal applicant).
High Cost Area Supplement
- Post located in a High Cost Area supplement zone (Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, Havering, & Waltham Forest, CEME).
- Attracts a 15% High Cost Area Supplement of basic salary (minimum: £4,870, maximum: £6,137 p/a, pro-rated for part-time roles).
