Speech and Language Therapist (Welsh Essential)

Location and Language Requirements

The ability to speak Welsh fluently, and to assess children's speech and language and provide intervention in Welsh, is essential for this role.


Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative, Welsh-speaking, Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our well-established, supportive, and experienced Speech & Language Therapy Team in a full-time, permanent role.

The successful candidate will collaborate with other Speech and Language Therapists to assess and treat children and young people with speech, language, and communication needs.


About the Role

Based in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) East Integrated Health Community (IHC) covering Wrexham and Flintshire, this role is part of a well-established paediatric service.

You will work in various settings, providing assessment, advice, and therapy to children with:

  • Speech difficulties
  • Language disorders
  • Communication needs

Join a team-based approach where close collaboration with specialist therapists, families, and supporting agencies is expected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and treat children with speech, language, and communication needs in multiple settings.
  • Develop and implement therapy plans that are evidence-based and aligned with patient needs.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with parents, carers, and other healthcare professionals (e.g., paediatricians, teachers, social workers).
  • Deliver parent/child support workshops, training, and professional education as required.
  • Document and update assessments/main intervention plans diligently for record-keeping.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across BCUHB, including in other specialist areas, to share best practices.
  • Sharpen transferable skills by maintaining an adaptable and forward-thinking approach.

Detailed Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential:

  • A recognised degree (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • A registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

Desirable:

  • Active involvement with an appropriate clinical network group or specialist interest hub.

Experience

Essential:

  • Clinical experience across Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy services (including community, outreach, or direct care).

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience in delegating to non-registered staff (e.g. Therapy Assistants).
  • Demonstrating successful multidisciplinary teamwork.

Skills

Essential:

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including engagement with children, young people, and families.
  • Strong knowledge of assessment tools used in Paediatric SLT.
  • Time and task management expertise to balance caseload duties alongside referrals, records, and development activities.
  • Full proficiency in delivering Welsh intervention and assessment.
