Our client in the Information Technology and Services industry is looking for a SQL Server Lead to design, develop, and optimize enterprise-scale SQL Server solutions supporting security, risk, control, and records management initiatives. This hands-on technical leadership role requires deep expertise in SQL Server development, performance engineering, data modeling, and database architecture to deliver trusted, resilient, and compliant data platforms. The successful candidate will lead technical delivery, mentor engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to build scalable, high-performing database solutions while ensuring compliance with enterprise security and governance standards.
What you will do:

- Design, develop, and optimize complex T-SQL stored procedures, functions, views, and database objects.
- Build and maintain scalable data models and physical schemas that support security, risk, control, and records management reporting.
- Engineer resilient batch and near-real-time data processing solutions.
- Perform data profiling, root cause analysis, incident investigation, and problem management.
- Optimize SQL Server performance through execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, partitioning, statistics management, and IO/CPU tuning.
- Implement automated testing, data quality checks, reconciliations, and repeatable validation processes.
- Support SIT, UAT, deployment, and release management activities.
- Ensure database solutions comply with security, classification, retention, access control, auditing, and segregation of duties requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers, analysts, architects, product owners, and governance teams to translate business and regulatory requirements into technical solutions.
- Review code, enforce development standards, and mentor team members on SQL Server best practices.
- Monitor production environments, troubleshoot issues, and implement performance improvements and automation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
