The Role
The Sr. Controls Engineer will be responsible for driving the design, functionality, and testing of upper-level automated sortation systems. The candidate will lead and assist in designing and programming new projects while demonstrating expertise in diagnosing and solving controls-related issues, including:
- I/O (Input/Output) and hardware troubleshooting (e.g., controller setup, VFDs, communications devices)
- Software troubleshooting (e.g., PLC and HMI programming)
- Electrical troubleshooting techniques
This role requires providing leadership, guidance, and mentoring to junior-level engineers and contractors, ensuring accurate documentation, system functionality, and adherence to design and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
- Write and implement modular, reusable PLC code while assisting with on-site controls engineering tasks.
- Design and develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) using tools like **Ignition()`.
Testing & Implementation
- Implement PLC and HMI programs to meet design and customer specifications.
- Review electrical designs and produce accurate as-built drawings for approval.
Troubleshooting & Commissioning
- Commission and troubleshoot complex automated systems.
- Provide site engineering support and conduct system acceptance testing.
- Support system commissioning efforts as needed.
Collaboration & Project Oversight
- Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives, and third-party vendors during design and execution phases.
- Mentor and lead junior controls engineers and contractors.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a comparable field.
- 4–7 years of industrial controls experience, including:
- PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, LD, ST, SCL)
- HMI programming (Ignition SCADA, Siemens Unified Architecture)
- I/O device design, implementation, and troubleshooting
- Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.)
- Low voltage electrical design and drawing creation
- Experience with VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) is preferred.
- Microsoft 365 (Office Apps) familiarity required.
- Equivalent work experience may substitute for education.

- Ability to troubleshoot and isolate controls I/O problems.
- Managing and executing basic system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits.
- Proficiency in VFDs, induction motors, PLCs, and industrial networks.

- Demonstrated project, service, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to collaborate professionally with team members, managers, and clients.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Primary Location: Professional office with standard equipment (computers, phones, etc.).
- Travel: 70–80% field-based to industrial sites, requiring appropriate PPE (e.g., safety gear, diagnostic tools, laptops, networking equipment).
Physical Considerations
- Lifting: Capability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Mobility: Ability to climb ladders and navigate automation equipment.
- Stamina: Prolonged standing, bending, and cramped work conditions may be required.
- Exposure: Potential noise levels, hazardous tools, moving mechanical parts, and building materials.
