Sr. Functional Safety Engineer

Job Purpose

The Sr. Functional Safety Engineer supports the delivery of ISO 26262 functional safety activities across electrified driveline products. This role works closely with cross-functional engineering teams, suppliers, and customers to ensure safety requirements are defined, implemented, and verified throughout the development lifecycle.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support ISO 26262 activities through the full development lifecycle, including:

    • Safety planning
    • Hazard analysis
    • Safety concepts
    • Requirements development
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineering to ensure:

    • Safety requirements are feasible, clearly understood, and properly traced and implemented
  • Engage directly with customers in:

    • The request for quotation (RFQ) stage
    • Joint reviews of functional safety objectives and specific requirements
    • Resolution of functional safety concerns
  • Develop and maintain (directly or indirectly) all necessary work products, including but not limited to:

    • Safety Plan
    • Safety Manual
    • Safety Concepts
    • ASIL rating/decomposition
    • D-I-A-H-ARA
    • Safety Requirements
    • FMEA & FTA
    • Safety Verification and Validation activities
    • Confirmation measures
    • Safety Case

  • Promote consistency and continuous improvement of functional safety processes across teams.

  • Support issue resolution related to safety findings, requirement gaps, or test results.

  • Contribute to functional safety training and awareness sessions, helping teams grasp:

    • Roles
    • Responsibilities
    • Process expectations
  • Travel to key stakeholder meetings, both domestic and international, as required.

Education and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in:

    • Automotive/Engineering
    • Electrical/Engineering
    • Systems Engineering or a related field
  • 7–10 years of experience implementing ISO 26262, preferably in:

    • Powertrain
    • Electric vehicle systems
  • Expertise in safety concepts, including:

    • Hazard analysis and risk assessment
    • FMEA
    • FTA at system and subsystem levels
  • Strong knowledge of systems engineering and ability to apply it across disciplines:

    • Electronics
    • Software
    • Mechanical hardware
    • Hydraulics

  • Experience implementing functional safety standards, including:

    • IEC 61508
    • EN 13849
    • ISO 15998
    • ISO 26262
    • ISO 25119
    • IEC 62061
    • CMMI
    • ASPICE
    • INCOSE
  • Progressive responsibility and hands-on experience in:

    • Vehicle system architectures
    • Control systems

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong ability to build relationships across disciplines in a matrix organization.

  • Excellent communication skills, including:

    • Listening
    • Speaking
    • Writing at all levels
  • Proven expertise in customer relationship management.

  • Independent decision-making with consultation/communication at appropriate levels.

  • Strong ethical behaviour and commitment to inclusion and diversity.

  • Balanced skillset combining strategic and hands-on execution, including proactive planning.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (~10% of the time).
