Job Description Summary
Join GE Vernova’s Grid Automation R&D team to spearhead the next generation of power system protection and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.
The Sr Power Systems Protection & Control Application Engineer will report to the Application Engineering Team Leader where we will provide solutions and technical leadership to help drive innovation of GE Vernova Grid Solutions protection and control devices. You will define product technical requirements and specifications, conduct simulations, and provide model-based design expertise and mentorship to the team members.
You will be a seasoned technical authority with a deep understanding of power system protection and control capable of developing robust solutions to meet customer requirements and future market trends. You will demonstrate leadership, communication and collaboration skills, capable of shaping technical solutions and guidance to team members.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Work with Program & Product Management teams to create high-level design specifications.
- Develop and support protection and control solutions utilising design specifications, model-based design which facilitates code generation.
- Perform system studies and simulations using appropriate tools to validate algorithms.
- Analyse user specifications / requirements to recommend appropriate solutions.
- Analyse market trends and requirements to propose new developments in GE Vernova’s P&C products.
- Provide technical consultation to cross-functional teams throughout the business to improve or resolve products, applications or field issues.
- Provide technical consultation, leadership, and guidance throughout the entire NPI design process.
- Author technical papers and present materials at tradeshows and conferences for GE Vernova P&C products and algorithms.
- Innovate and develop Intellectual Property in the area and adjacent areas of power system protection.
- Assist in preparing training material and deliver training courses, where required.
- Provide technical guidance, direction, and training to new and/or experienced engineers, specialists, technicians when required.
- To take ownership of product and/or application.
- Lead and own technical discussions with internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution, or equivalent knowledge or experience.
- Minimum 10 years of overall experience in protection and control system design and studies. And minimum of 5 years of experience in developing detailed design specifications for protection and control (P&C) algorithms, preferably within a relay manufacturing environment.
- Extensive experience in power system protection, automation, and control product design.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink for model design and power system simulation tools such as RTDS, PSCAD or ATP/EMTP.
- Proven track record of publishing and presenting at industry forums and conferences.
- Familiarity with industry standards and documentation procedures of electrical utilities.
- Knowledge of modern protection and control and distribution automation developments and trends.
- Knowledge or experience of metering, wireless / Ethernet / serial communications applicable to P&C (such as IEC61850, Modbus, DNP3.0 and IEC60870-5-103).

Desired Characteristics
- Field experience will be beneficial.
- Familiarity with grid modernization technologies, virtualization and high voltage system is highly desirable and considered a strong plus.
- Good communication skills with a proactive and open approach to conflict resolution.
- Collaborative approach to working in a team, displaying initiative and proactive approach to tasks.
- Flexible and adaptable; open to change and modification of tasks, working in multi-tasking environment.
- Working knowledge of GEV protections, networking, and substation automation products is preferred.
- Proven record of writing and presenting papers at industry conferences.
- Experience in developing applications for the Protection and controller market in Real Time Controller market.
- Actively participating in International Standard related activities.
- Mentoring fresh minds.

Pay Range
For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $120,000 and $170,000 CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.
