About the Role
Join our critical Scam Prevention team as a Software Engineer. This senior engineering role focuses on detecting and protecting against sophisticated adversarial attacks and financial crime, directly safeguarding our global customers.
Your work will drive tangible impact by:
- Building and refining controls to prevent reputational and financial losses for Wise and our users.
- Delivering end-to-end production-ready systems for fraud screening.
- Increasing automation and reliability while maintaining security.
What We’ll Be Delivering
You’ll take ownership of large initiatives across key areas:
- Backend & Frontend Development (80/20 split):
- Backend systems: Detecting fraud, executing pre-emptive safeguards and monitoring transactions in real-time.
- Frontend integration: Enhancing user experiences with fraud detection feedback without compromising security.
- Proactive Fraud Mitigation: Devising systems to anticipate patterns and actions that indicate potential scams.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring fraud detection adheres to financial regulations and industry standards.

Core Responsibilities
- Build and Scale Detection Systems:
- Design and implement large-scale backend systems and frontend components.
- Collaborate closely with AI teams to integrate latest machine learning and anomaly detection.
- Create and Propagate Rules & Policies:
- Set and enforce corrective actions for risky transactions, ensuring compliance with Wise policies.
- Optimise Financial Solutions:
- Develop systems that balance speed, security, and cost for flexible, customer-friendly payments.
Ideal Candidate Background (Must-Have)
Technical Expertise
- Programming Language & Frameworks: Strong professional experience in Java (or JVM language) alongside Spring.
- Frontend Tech: Building React-based applications using JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Backend Tech: Operating servers and networked services capable of high traffic and scalable web applications.
- System Design: Ability to conceive, transform and run distributed architectures for security-crème-confronting applications.
- Databases: Hands-on experience with relational (PostgreSQL) and non-relational databases, including optimising queries and resilient schema design.
Engineering & Best Practices
- Professional Ownership: Think like a product owner—data-driven decisions, making trade-offs words about customers.
- Code Quality & Testing: Adhere to Test-Driven Development (TDD) standards and meticulous extensibility principles.
- CD/DevOps: Experience administering CI/CD pipelines and operating code deployment processes.

Ideal Soft Skills
- Problem-Solving: Proficiency in translating complex behavioural patterns into technical systems.
- Collaboration: Effective dictating technical ideas across teams: Product, Data Science, compliance.
Nice-to-Have Experience
Experience working with:
- The machine-learning lifecycle: from feature engineering to deploying AI models into production environments.
- Working in RegTech or FinTech environments.
Benefits
- Starting Salary: £87,000 - £111,000
