About the Company
Our client is a global technology company that connects thousands of brands and retailers with billions of consumers through user generated content, product reviews and shopping insights. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in the US, they operate offices across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, with a well established engineering presence in Belfast. They are a certified Great Place to Work in the UK and several other countries, with a culture built on innovation, experimentation and transparency.
The Role
You will join the Insights team as a Staff Data Engineer, designing, building and supporting the large scale, distributed data systems that power the company's products and services. This is a role with real architectural authority: you will own design decisions end to end, from ingestion formats through processing layers to storage and retrieval, and you will own the non functional requirements that come with them, including reliability, scalability and performance. It suits an engineer who has personally made and can clearly explain the reasoning behind significant data architecture decisions, rather than someone who has worked adjacent to teams that made them. Expect interviews to dig into the why behind your past design choices in real depth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build large scale, distributed data systems and pipelines that power products and services
- Own end to end architecture decisions, from data formats and layer transitions through to storage and processing, along with the rationale behind them
- Define and deliver non functional requirements including reliability, scalability and performance across the data platform
- Develop and optimise data pipelines and data storage and retrieval processes
- Drive adoption of software engineering best practices across testing, CI/CD and version control
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to translate data requirements into robust, maintainable solutions
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across the data infrastructure as they arise
- Champion emerging data engineering technologies and bring them into the platform where they add value
What You'll Need
Essential:
- 7+ years designing and building robust, scalable, distributed data systems and pipelines using open source and public cloud technologies
- Deep, hands on experience with Spark or a comparable advanced distributed processing framework... you have built and tuned these systems yourself and can speak to the detail
- Proven ownership of end to end data architecture, with the ability to clearly articulate the reasoning behind your design decisions, such as file format choices, layer transitions within a medallion architecture, and the trade offs involved
- Direct experience defining and owning a system's non functional requirements, rather than relying on adjacent teams to cover them
- Strong experience with data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or Dagster
- Big data storage and processing experience across tools such as DBT, SQL, Athena/Trino, Redshift, Snowflake and RDBMSs (PostgreSQL/MySQL), including performance tuning and indexing
- Knowledge of event driven architectures and streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka, Kafka Streams or Apache Flink
- Experience with public cloud environments (AWS, GCP or Azure) and Terraform
- Strong software engineering practices: testing, CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), agile development, git and containers
- BSc in Computer Science or a related discipline
