Blue Light Card. Individually great, together unstoppable
The Role and the Team
At Blue Light Card, we're looking for a Staff Engineer to join our growing Engineering function and help shape the future of our technology estate.
This is a senior individual contributor role operating alongside Engineering Managers, providing technical leadership across multiple squads without people-management responsibilities. You'll play a critical role in helping teams deliver value faster, make better architectural decisions, improve engineering standards, and ensure our technology investment supports our wider business goals.
You'll work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Engineers to define the "how" behind our roadmap, balancing delivery, quality, scalability, and cost. Success in this role is not measured by the amount of code you write, but by the outcomes you enable across teams, the technical direction you influence, and your ability to help others deliver at their best.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, influencing technical strategy, and helping engineering teams scale in a fast-paced, product-led environment.
What You'll Do
- Provide technical leadership across multiple squads, helping teams deliver high-quality solutions aligned to business goals.
- Own and drive cross-team technical initiatives, ensuring accountability for outcomes rather than just outputs.
- Lead system design and architectural decisions, balancing scalability, reliability, maintainability, and cost.
- Partner with Product Managers and Engineering Managers to shape pragmatic technical solutions that maximise value.
- Contribute hands-on through solution design, coding, code reviews, planning, and technical problem-solving.
- Improve engineering quality, developer experience, observability, and operational excellence across teams.
- Coach and mentor engineers, helping raise technical capability and establish best practices.
- Champion modern engineering approaches, including AI-assisted development, reusable patterns, and continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
