Staff Backend Engineer in EMEA (Remote)

About the Role
We’re seeking a Staff Backend Engineer in EMEA (remote). You’ll provide senior technical leadership by shaping the architecture of our backend platform, including critical 3rd-party integrations, while ensuring seamless financial stability for employees. This role involves guiding major systems at the intersection of banking, payroll, and timekeeping—dropping us into uncharted territory in fintech.
You’ll:
- Influence the technical direction of our platform, balancing speed with reliability in a high-growth environment
- Architect novel fintech solutions, iterating from concept to scalability
- Mentor engineers and uphold high engineering standards
- Work globally, collaborating with product and engineering teams across borders
No typical day—just empowering users to build stronger financial futures.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design
- Set architecture and scalability strategy for RESTful APIs, core systems, and distributed micro-services
- Guide decisions on financial data workflows, integration layer, and user-facing scalability
- Translate ambiguous product goals into robust technical execution plans

Systems & Integration
- Build highly available, scalable infrastructure supporting banking/payroll interoperability
- Design and maintain 3rd-party integrations (vendors, partners)
- Ensure seamless data model optimizations across SQL/NoSQL databases
Culture & Collaboration
- Mentor engineers and raise the team’s technical bar
- Collaborate cross-functionally, balancing speed with long-term reliability
- Promote best practices in observability (logging, metrics, alerting)
Who We Look For
We seek essays (CVs welcome) from exceptional engineers who:
- Staff-level experience (~8+ years) with expertise in backend architecture at scale
- Roll-up-sleeve mentality—you kick off ambitious projects, solve rare edge cases, and drive outcomes
- Strong system design instincts that anticipate scalability challenges
- Fintech or enterprise software pedigree, ideally designing from first principles
- Ability to abstract complexity when collaborating with stakeholders, product, QA, or support teams

Technical Requirements
✔ Proficient in Go/Golang or Python ✔ Deep experience in RESTful API design and reverse engineering ✔ SQL/NoSQL expertise (namely PostgreSQL, MongoDB) ✔ Kafka/RabbitMQ/Pulsar experience (preferred) ✔ Cloud-native expertise (AWS/Azure/GCP, K8s, Docker, ECS) ✔ Strong CI/CD pipeline knowledge (GitLab + GitHub Actions)
