Job Description
Wallingford, Oxfordshire | On-site | Full-time | 37.5 hours/week
Are you curious about the ground beneath your feet? At Fugro, we turn that curiosity into insight. Join our laboratory team in Wallingford and play a key role in delivering high-impact geotechnical data that supports major infrastructure and environmental projects across the UK and beyond. As a Staff Laboratory Technician, you’ll be part of a friendly, collaborative team working hands-on with soil and rock samples to produce accurate, reliable results that help shape the world around us. This is an on-site role in our modern laboratory, where you’ll work closely with technicians, engineers, and team leaders. You’ll report to a Team Leader within your testing area and contribute to a culture of safety, quality, and operational excellence. Whether you're just starting out or looking to grow your technical skills, this is a great opportunity to build a meaningful career in geoscience.
Your Role and Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests on soil and rock samples, following client specifications and industry standards.
- Accurately record and calculate test data using spreadsheets and data logging systems.
- Ensure all testing is carried out to the highest safety and quality standards.
- Collaborate with team leaders and quality engineers to ensure timely and compliant data delivery.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, keeping accurate records of checks and servicing.
- Support the lab’s accreditation to ISO 17025 by upholding rigorous quality procedures.
- Contribute to a positive QHSSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Security, and Environment) culture through active participation and awareness.
What You’ll Need to Thrive in This Role
- 5+ GCSEs (or equivalent), ideally with English, Maths, and Science.
- Strong numeracy and literacy skills, with attention to detail in data handling and documentation.
- Basic IT skills, including confidence using Excel and digital data systems.
- A proactive, safety-conscious mindset and willingness to learn new testing techniques.
- Previous laboratory experience is desirable but not essential — full training will be provided.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
