Job Overview

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN INTERNAL ROLE FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE RUH ONLY

We are currently looking to recruit a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our dedicated Dermatology Outpatient team.

We provide expert care for both outpatients and inpatients with dermatological problems, including management of acute dermatological cases and emergencies. We assist in the running of clinics for Adult/Paediatric dermatology, Acne treatment, biologics, skin surgery and skin cancer, vulval clinics, immunosuppressed patients, and contact allergy with patch testing. We are responsible for a very busy Dermatology Day Treatment Unit offering Inpatient and Outpatient advice, Phototherapy, Topical therapies, and Wound care management including complicated leg ulcers. The nursing team are supported by consultant dermatologists/resident doctors, skin cancer nurse specialists, and admin staff. We are involved in research, audits, and education and offer training for all staff.

The team have a fantastic reputation within the Trust, holding 'Silver Accreditation' status; providing excellent care at every level. It is crucial the successful candidate can work effectively within a team, demonstrating consistent professionalism and always focusing on patient-centered care.

Main duties of the job

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating plans of patient care
  • To work closely with the multi-disciplinary team
  • To provide education to both patients, carers, and staff
  • To promote healthy lifestyle changes
  • To assist with audit and establishing new protocols/care pathways to provide high quality, safe care
  • To complete accurate documentation both written and electronically
  • Prepare and coordinate clinics so they run safely and efficiently – this will involve housekeeping duties and stock control management
  • To administer Phototherapy to patients
  • To assist with supporting minor surgical procedures
  • To assist with the delivery of a patch testing
  • To perform medical photography
  • To provide wound care and topical treatments, including Doppler and compression bandaging
  • To be a mentor for new staff and students
  • To engage in research and provide evidence-based care
  • To maintain CPD and NMC revalidation requirements

Qualifications And Training

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse 1 with NMC registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of willingness to undertake courses /gain knowledge, skills, and experience relevant to Dermatology Care

Desirable criteria

  • Dermatology Nursing ENB 393 or other recognised Dermatology nursing course
  • Teaching qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice, particularly within the specialty area and the application of this in practice
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply it to self
  • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for own practice & behaviour
  • Demonstrates an empathetic and caring approach to patients and relatives and ensure that patients’ dignity & respect is always maintained

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience in nursing working in acute setting
  • Experience working in Dermatology
  • Experience supporting student nurses, newly qualified staff, or HCSW
