Job Description: Band 5 Staff Nurse - Emergency Department
The Royal Surrey County Hospital Emergency Department sees approximately 75,000 patients every year. To support and enhance the care we provide to patients due to promotion, we are looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic Band 5 staff nurse to join our busy team.
This is an exciting time to join the Emergency Department as we are currently undergoing a rebuild to enhance the patient’s journey through the department. We have introduced dynamic patient pathways to improve patient flow and experience, which has resulted in the vast improvement of the department’s performance. Our team is motivated, energetic, and we strive to deliver the highest standards of evidence-based nursing care. We are passionate about Emergency Nursing and the service we provide our local community.
Requirements
To apply for the Band 5 position, you must have at least 6 months of acute ward experience at Band 5, with evidence of continuing professional development.
You will have to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of current issues in emergency care within the NHS. The successful applicant must be able to work an internal rotation shift pattern of days and nights, be able to work in a fast-paced environment, possess good communication skills, and be able to use their own initiative.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
