🔍 Job Title: Staff Nurse 💰 Band 5 Salary: £34,544 – £43,039 per annum 💰 Additional Benefit: £1,461 Distant Islands Allowance (d PAR) per annum ⏳ Hours: 36 per week 📅 Contract: 1 year fixed-term
🔥 About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Staff Nurse to join the Nursing Team on the Isle of Barra. You will play a vital role in delivering medical, acute, and community nursing care across a range of settings, including:
- InpatientUnit (3 beds)
- Emergency Department
- Outpatient Clinic
- Community Nursing (CTAC, Palliative Care)
Your work will span Isle of Barra and Isle of Vatersay, serving approximately 1,300 residents. This is a varied and unpredictable role requiring dynamic adaptability, advanced nursing skills, and clinical experience in multiple specialties, including: 🔹 Medical/Acute Care 🔹 Community Nursing 🔹 Trauma Response 🔹 Paediatric Care 🔹 Palliative & End-of-Life Care 🔹 Both Scheduled and Unscheduled Care

🩺 Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical care as part of the Barra Nursing Team, covering both hospitals on Barra and Vatersay.
- Deliver high-standard, evidence-based nursing care to a diverse patient population of 1,300 residents.
- Work rotationally across shifts to ensure round-the-clock medical and acute care availability.
- Ensure compliance with all Mandatory Training requirements for WINHS (Western Isles NHS Board).
- Support preceptorship of newly qualified nurses (applications welcome from work-experienced nurses).
- Multidisciplinary team contribution, collaborating with physicians, allied health professionals, and other healthcare operatives to improve patient outcomes.
- Drive the education, training, and supervision of new or under-supervised staff.
🔐 Requirements
- Current Nurse Registration (城市 terve approved).
- Must hold a valid Irish / UK Driving licence (essential due to the remote, isolated geography and transport demands).
- Commitment to professional development and embracing best-practice, evidence-driven care.
- Ability to effectively contribute in an interdisciplinary team setting.
- Pass the NHS Scotland PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme check (additional process required for all NHS appointments).
- Return to Permanent/on-going Paid Staff after COVID Contract (if applicable) – Check contract details for details.
🚗 Practicalities
- Dedicated driving will be integral to role performance on several occasions.
- No relocation expenses will be offered for this position.
- Travelling to/from the Isle of Barra is not covered in salary—employees manage their own transit arrangements.
- Job-specific skill requirements include Experience in island settings being preferential.
