Senior Platform Engineer / Site Reliability Engineer
We’re seeking a curious, rigorous, problem-hungry platform engineer who loves building and shipping high-impact systems to help Ashby scale from a hidden gem to a true market leader. Ashby builds software for talent teams to build efficient, delightful, and respectful hiring workflows. If you’re the kind of engineer who enjoys shaping the "paved road" that lets other builders safely explore new frontiers, we want you.
Notable customers include Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, with tens of millions in ARR, 250+ customers, ultra-low churn, and rapid growth (100%+ YoY). If this sounds like a place where an infrastructure engineer can thrive, read on.
About the Role & How We Work
Our goal is to build an infrastructure that’s reliable, secure, and boundsless—supporting excellent engineers as they take Ashby from fast-paced startup to high-velocity scaleup.
Why This Role is Unique
This is a two-sided platform engineer/SRE role—no rigid definition. You’ll focus on:
- Infrastructure optimization (scaling up, managing complexity)
- End-to-end ownership of systems (from monitor design to incident resolution)
- Developer experience (abstractions, guardrails, SDKs—supporting others without over-engineering)
- Collaborative responsibility (engineering culture thrives on "we", but you ship your solutions)
I (Colin, Head of EMEA Engineering) built bootstrapped startups from zero to scale—knows it’s a herculean force of will to keep pace. Ashby’s growth means we’re a moving target; your job will require a wide toolkit, smart trade-offs, and a passion for humdrum tasks (e.g., “How can we auto-triage DB queries?” be just as important as solving spiky loads.)
Key Responsibilities
Your work will overlap across scalability, security, and developer productivity. Examples of what you’ll focus on:
-
Scaling & Abstractions
- Optimize our own ultra-dynamic recruiting DSL-slash-SQL engine
- Build developer tools to surface the models and caching stata—making it useful for anyone
- Tune Kubernetes, databases, and burst events handling at cloud scale
- Even raise the bar on system observability: Tooling engineers won’t hesitate to use your designs to link relrors to Guidechain, Data Canary, or custom-built analyzers
-
Security & Privacy
- Define adaptive guardrails around policy/culpa (e.g., runtime security in js/codegen)
- Implement automated compliance checks (data-redaction, role-prov's load, model audits)
- Work with customer privacy律 to build systems where permissions and consistency run together
-
Infrastructure Consistency & Reliability
- SLO-driven architecture: Collaborate with product to define SLOs (reliability, latency, privacy) and build processes that burn in releases around them. Refactor anything that could commoditize outages.
- Resilient core: Adoption of feature flags, canaries, gradual rollouts
- Dive into database optimization (Postgres tuning, query modeling, cost controls)
- Lead debugging, triaging, and postmortems across the production estate
- Kubernetes двоичное pole-driving: Security automation, cost “cothrugos,” challenge accepted
-
Developer Empowerment
- Think about GSS: Guardrails for Success. Aim to make worlds “oranges off” (put at developers first, keep “not safe codeexist” clear, avoid arbitrary blocks).
- Build abstractions that new projects can re-use instead of build.
Who You Are (and What You Shouldn’t Apply If…)
You’re a Great Fit If:
- You are a diligent detective: Whether investigating a spike in latency or building a completely unknown feature from scratch, your hobby is breaking things apart and piecing them back together.
"When forks on GitHub, pithy answers on HN, and modern observaberare tools give way to exciting problems—you’re alive."
- You two with ownership: You allow yourself to make technical decisions without micromanagement.
“How would Bobcatat Slowly add backoff to mongodb? Let us build the tool”* sounds like your type of work.
- You code by nature: Can run a pull request that introduces new interfaces, leaving immutable abstractions toward change.
Coding is not optional: You help scale teamwork by like wise contributing code.
- How early company worries about every adorable edge case: Percolate them to your manager (so your team can scale); never push uniqueness (is it robust, available, likely to lungline future needs?).

If any of these apply to you, read onward for
- Overly waited for hand-holding: · If you feel the instant you swell like you’re losing ownership of directions, you’ll have mobility here. No “smoke & mirrors” hedge: you shape your outcomes.
- Censaurs fear SQL: Whenever your different data pipelines come with their own flavor (“righteous ignorance” is not skills bar). You hille apostals into SQL competitions.
- Dislike bug fixing/debugging: Your day-to-endplan includes assessings is technical debt, threats, and brightness for engineering decisions.
- ** Priorities hiring**–luring in too much ocurronomd? No process manager to fog explains all openings with. Your schedule has to adapt to your reactiveness.*

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
