Platform Engineer (or SRE) – Ashby
Ashby builds software that lets talent teams build an efficient, delightful, respectful hiring process. We’re looking for a curious, rigorous, problem-hungry platform engineer (who codes!) to grow with us into the next stage.
We have notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, with tens of millions in ARR, >100% YoY growth, 2500+ customers, and a reputation for low churn and seamless scalability.
This role blends Platform Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer — perfect for candidates who enjoy infrastructure and systems design. Ibid:
About the Role & How We Work
Hi 👋 I’m Colin, Head of EMEA Engineering. As a long-term startup veteran, I’ve seen how a skilled infrastructure team can elevate any company. Ours is no exception—we want someone who builds solid systems, can absorb risk, and keeps teams unblocked. We believe in minimal process but maximal responsibility—excellence comes from ownership, not ceremonies.
Our infrastructure already works, but Ashby’s growth means we’ll need to dice the problems and reassemble them in scalable ways. Stability needs rigor, but speed requires adaptability. As a Platform Engineer:
- Scale our systems without a garage of pet projects.
- Own end-to-end projects from concept to monitoring, with minimal oversight but strong accountability
- Collaborate closely with engineering on delivery for vulnerabilities, security, reliability, and observability.
- Invent tools to abstract the complex and give the team extra speed.
Key challenges:
- Optimize Ashby’s homegrown ultra-dynamic DSL-to-SQL compiler
- Build automated guardrails for security and privacy
- Support canary deploys, gradual rollouts, and feature flags (securely!)
- Define SLOs/SLIs to build a reliable, predictable platform
- Optimize database, storage, and Kubernetes for efficiency
As a result: boredom accentuated with variety. You’ll still hit hard problems—security patches, database migrations, mySQL debugging—but you’ll work with engineers who can too.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
You Should Apply If…
✅ You obsess over problems. You’ll...
- Stare at exceptional bugs, torments systems without mercy, and avoid shoe-shined solutions that only feel “off”.
- Value cross-disciplinary ownership: collaborating with product teams ideally over handing off to new teams.
- Contribute to documentation—observability, runbooks, best practices become part of your rhythm, not a hindrance.
✅ You lean on discipline but hunger for responsibility. Unlike systems where managers abstract away nuance, here, you own. Expect to...
- Champion high-value decisions without handholding.
- Dive into SQL, fight dogfights for performance, and debug Kubernetes, ETCD, and tracing systems.
- Pivot on complexity parries: medical emergencies can happen on any shift, so roll with them.
✅ Being an infrastructure/observability/risk-taker appeals. We built the creation stack using:
- TypeScript, Node, Postgres, Redis, cloud-native <datadog, sentry>
- Self-service CI/CD (fastening in a world that forgets speed), and follow-the-sun incident rotations.
You Should Not Apply If…
❌ You seek “no risk” decision-making. We avoid surplus process—but that also means significant decision-making delegation to you.
✅ You hate SQL because operations-like features mean deep visibility into data quality at scale.
❌ ** Coding for you is “nice to have”, not a toolbuilder’s hobby.** ❌ You loosely described “development feedback” as “idle CXO meetings” — we’re a desktop, async-first workplace.
Technology Stack
We prefer generalists, not “Kubernetes deep divers”.
- TypeScript, Node.js, Postgres, Redis at a core. Arrowed up with React, Apollo GraphQL.
- Internal datastores, implementation patterns on top of multi-ethnicity+stacks.

Why Ashby?
We’re at mission-critical scale:
- 1000+ product deployments per day
- We care about hires’ development experience: we built what disaggregated Talent teams need for zippy, efficient, sociable hires (currently outsized A&K).
// At Ashby, diverse teams + unblocking ownership make for best outcomes. Recently we onboarded an AI peasant tweeted:
“The most exciting projects don’t require mid-project process slack. Ask away.”
Which is why we invest:
- ‘Unocracy’ of coding – write PRs like docs, make (opinionated but thoughtful) ice-thins.
- Align modestly where we can. Full-remote, company wide calendar sprints and full company team days.
- Paid diversity efforts with true impact guarantees.
Interviews
Our commitment to you:
- Zero leetcode or classical whiteboards
- 3 real roles at depth:
- Debug via pair programming on our codebase.
- Meet with tech design: SLOs, circuits, IaC.
- Discuss yourself as “hide the ball” :o
Your first days: We’ll zero-in on “shift left build”: custom scripts to set up environments, and a gradual increment towards product-owning complexity.
Benefits
(Minus excerpt of lowlights because pay is performance-driven…)
- For mature leadership-benefits:
- Salary: £138K — £224K (depending on role)

- Unlimited PTO. We mean that.
