Staff Software Engineer – Full Stack, Backend & Integrations
📍 Warminster, Wiltshire – Hybrid, three days per week onsite
💷 Up to £120,000
🔐 UK nationality and eligibility for UK Security Clearance required
I’m partnering with an international defence technology company that builds mission-critical training and organisational-readiness software used by military, public-safety and resilience organisations across more than 70 countries.
They are looking for a hands-on Staff Software Engineer to take technical ownership of a major, multi-year UK defence transformation programme.
This is not a role where every requirement has already been defined. You will help shape the problems, make the key architectural decisions and lead substantial pieces of work from early discovery through to production.
The role is ideal for a backend-leaning full-stack engineer who enjoys solving complex integration and data challenges while remaining close to the code.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Acting as the technical lead for a highly capable engineering team
- Shaping the architecture across backend services, APIs, data and integrations
- Connecting a complex software platform with ERP systems, data lakehouse technology, optimisation engines and partner platforms
- Building reliable REST and event-driven integrations
- Introducing streaming and change-data-capture patterns where appropriate
- Developing full-stack product features across Java, SQL and Angular
- Leading technical discovery and design sessions
- Turning loosely defined customer needs into scalable technical solutions
- Raising standards across automated testing, CI/CD, observability and production reliability
- Mentoring Senior Engineers and helping them progress towards Staff-level scope
- Communicating technical decisions clearly to engineers, project teams and senior customer stakeholders
- Remaining hands-on while influencing the wider technical direction of the programme
Reasons to use Rodeo
I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Experience building APIs, services and complex third-party integrations
- Familiarity with Angular or another modern JavaScript framework

- Sound understanding of event-driven systems, streaming, batch processing and data-integration patterns
- Strong knowledge of automated testing, CI/CD, observability and production engineering
