Role Overview
We’re seeking backend software engineers—at all levels of experience—who can:
- Deliver features globally – Scale existing products and pioneers fresh capabilities for Starling’s international market(s)
- Thrive in ambiguity – Build confidence rapidly and own projects from start to finish
- Push boundaries – Extend Starling’s boundaries and champion clean code, automation, and architectural rigor
As a Staff Engineer
You’ll lead multiple facets of technology strategy and execution:
- Project & Delivery Lead Oversee complex projects from inception to deployment, ensuring adherence to engineering principles
- Technical Architecture Shape platform trajectory—inside tech (code quality, tooling, CI/CD) and outside (partnerships & compliance)
- Mentorship Uplift teams with guidance on cleansing, rendering, alignment, or test design (polishing others’ code is part of the routine)
- Innovation Identify gaps—whether in legacy systems, non-compliant docs, or clunky processes—and propose solutions before gaps disrupt massively
- Memory of the Organisation Preserve institutional knowledge through structure and documentation
- Everyday Leadership Role-model excellence across standards, review standards, and industry practices in Kubernetes, FinOps, or observability
- Client Interaction Partner with product managers to articulate challenges—to clients, regulators, and third parties

- Advance architectural decisions via technical roadmaps

- Solve special requests—ranging from a custom script to a brand-new invoice parser

- Be global first—applying strong universal patterns across distributed systems
