Role Overview

We’re seeking backend software engineers—at all levels of experience—who can:

  • Deliver features globally – Scale existing products and pioneers fresh capabilities for Starling’s international market(s)
  • Thrive in ambiguity – Build confidence rapidly and own projects from start to finish
  • Push boundaries – Extend Starling’s boundaries and champion clean code, automation, and architectural rigor

As a Staff Engineer

You’ll lead multiple facets of technology strategy and execution:

  • Project & Delivery Lead Oversee complex projects from inception to deployment, ensuring adherence to engineering principles
  • Technical Architecture Shape platform trajectory—inside tech (code quality, tooling, CI/CD) and outside (partnerships & compliance)
  • Mentorship Uplift teams with guidance on cleansing, rendering, alignment, or test design (polishing others’ code is part of the routine)
  • Innovation Identify gaps—whether in legacy systems, non-compliant docs, or clunky processes—and propose solutions before gaps disrupt massively
  • Memory of the Organisation Preserve institutional knowledge through structure and documentation
  • Everyday Leadership Role-model excellence across standards, review standards, and industry practices in Kubernetes, FinOps, or observability
  • Client Interaction Partner with product managers to articulate challenges—to clients, regulators, and third parties

As an Engineer

  • Champion testing & automation at all levels—a canonical part of every feature
  • Teach through action—help others understand and adopt best practices

  • Be global first—applying strong universal patterns across distributed systems
