Team Overview
We are the Global KYC and Onboarding Squad in the Servicing department and our mission is to enable teams at Wise to expand and fine-tune the business in a "config change" manner all across the globe, while remaining compliant and safe for customers.
The squad consists of three teams:
- Business Onboarding Verification
- Personal Onboarding Verification
- Wise Platform Verification (this handles our B2B platform)
These are diverse, cross-functional groups, passionate about solving complex problems with elegant solutions. Our team collaborates with backend and frontend engineers, mobile developers, designers, data analysts, and product managers to deliver exceptional customer experiences.
Our responsibility lies in critical verification journeys that business and personal customers complete before using Wise’s products. We own the entire verification lifecycle — from document collection flows and automated review systems to agent tooling and compliance monitoring. We operate with high autonomy, make data-driven decisions, and celebrate both technical excellence and customer impact.

Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
As a Senior Backend Engineer (IC4), you will:
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services, using supported tech stacks like Java (8+), Spring Boot, and cloud technologies
- Lead technical initiatives that improve our verification systems, focusing on automation, reliability, and performance
- Collaborate closely with product managers to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and conduct code reviews
- Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for our verification systems
- Build internal tools that enhance our verification agents' efficiency
- Contribute to our engineering culture by knowledge sharing and upholding best practices

Qualifications and Experience
What We’re Looking For
- 10+ years of experience with Java (8+) and recent experience with Spring framework
- Experience working with both SQL and NoSQL databases
- Strong system design skills with proven experience building distributed, high-throughput services
- A track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring others
- Profound understanding of security best practices and data protection principles
- Excellent problem-solving skills with an eye for attention to detail
- Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- (Bonus) Experience with financial or KYC verification systems
Benefits and Offerings
Compensation
- Starting salary: Base salary of £105,000 - £130,000 + RSUs (restricted stock units)
