Staff Software Engineer – Platform & Infrastructure
Barclays’ Payments Acquiring Business
About the Role
An exciting opportunity to join Barclays’ standalone Payments Acquiring business, shaped by a fintech-culture partnership with Brookfield Asset Management, in our new London offices.
We power the UK economy, processing billions in annual payments—from small businesses to domestic and international corporates. As a Staff Software Engineer on our Platform team, you’ll help build the high-velocity foundations that safely move billions through our systems. This is a high-impact role where you’ll lead deliverables, improve developer experience, and establish strong engineering defaults—while staying hands-on with product teams.
Key Accountabilities
Technical Leadership & Execution
- Design, develop, and continuously improve scalable, high-quality software using industry-leading tools and frameworks.
- Ensure performance-optimised, maintainable, and secure systems aligned with business objectives.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration with PMs, designers, and engineers to define requirements and integrate solutions seamlessly.
Engineering Culture & Growth
- Act as a mentor, share knowledge, and uphold high code quality through peer reviews and technical excellence initiatives.
- Foster a product-thinking mindset, treating the platform as a product with engineers as customers.
- Stay ahead of tech trends, influencing communities and advocating innovation.

Security & Collaboration
- Adhere to secure coding practices to protect sensitive data and mitigate risks.
- Implement robust unit testing to ensure reliability and maintainability.
Strategic Influence (for Senior Levels)
- Contribute to long-term strategy, drive requirements, and manage impact assessments.
- Guide teams, resolute situations, and align departmental work with corporate priorities.
- Demonstrate the Barclays LEAD framework (Listen, Energise, Align, Develop) if managing others.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to leadership, balancing risks, budgets, and growth objectives.
Requirements
Essential
- Extensive experience with complex, large-scale systems (troubleshooting failures at scale sustainably).
- Deep technical roles:
- Cloud, Kubernetes, CNCF (service mesh, distributed systems).
- Polyglot proficiency (e.g., Rust/Go/Kotlin) and a "right tool for the job" ethos.
- Ability to translate technical complexities to non-engineers (e.g., explaining a service mesh).
- Strong product mindset and stakeholder collaboration (working closely with Product Managers, PMs, and peers).

Highly Valued
- Background in risk controls or transformation projects.
- Experience driving technical transformations and shaping drawdowns.
- Experience with borrowing/leveraging third-party infrastructure or leading tools adoption at scale.
- Commercial sensibility and alignment with business-clutch revenue propositions.
Key Assessments
- Technical skills spanning the cncf ecosystem (e.g., Envoy, Istio), cloud natives (AWS/GCP), and programming paradigms.
- Business/strategic thinking (risk, transformation, impact).
- Stakeholder influence (cross-team collaboration, pitchмаза sun).
