Job Description
We're looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join our ECS Engineering team. This is a senior individual contributor role with no line management responsibilities, focused on technical leadership, architecture, innovation, and engineering excellence. You'll influence technology strategy across multiple teams, represent engineering on architectural forums, and help shape the future of AI-powered customer experiences.
This is a hybrid role being 40% office based in Nottingham.
What You'll Do
- Lead the design and evolution of scalable, secure, and high-performing software solutions across multiple teams.
- Act as a technical authority for front-end architecture, helping define and drive our front-end engineering strategy.
- Represent engineering in architecture boards and technical governance forums.
- Champion engineering best practices across code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and software delivery.
- Embed AI-driven engineering practices, helping teams leverage AI effectively throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Drive experimentation, optimisation, and testing strategies to improve customer outcomes and business performance.
- Mentor and coach engineers through technical leadership, collaboration.
- Remain hands-on when required, deep in the detail, and leading by example.
- Partner with Product, Design, Data and Engineering leaders to influence technical direction and product roadmaps.

Qualifications
- Proven experience operating at Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Lead Engineer, or equivalent level, with a track record of delivering complex software solutions at scale.
- Expert-level React and TypeScript skills including design systems, deep experience defining and driving front-end architecture strategy across multiple teams.
- Experience applying AI in software development, including coding tools, prompt engineering, AI service integration, data connectivity, best practices, and adoption across engineering teams.
- Excellent influencing and mentoring skills, with experience representing engineering in architecture boards, technical governance forums, and design discussions, while leading through technical excellence rather than line management.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in component libraries, accessibility, and performance optimisation.
- Expertise in optimisation and experimentation, including A/B testing, personalisation, feature flagging, recommendation systems, or other data-driven decisioning capabilities.
