Staff Software Engineer
Numi has partnered with a pioneering technology company transforming physical spaces through advanced AI and automation—turning mundane repetition into seamless, magical experiences. From transforming global transit hubs and mobility infrastructure into frictionless, autonomous experiences for millions of members, to expanding their intelligence layer across retail and hospitality, they are building a world that feels instinctive. To power their next phase of global growth, they are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join their core e-commerce and pre-book mobility platform team. In this role, you will hold a master-level understanding of distributed systems and directly influence the technical strategy of a high-volume global platform. You will navigate both organizational and technical complexities, keeping the engineering team ahead of the curve as they scale worldwide. Operating from a modern Manchester office, you will serve as a vital collaborator to engineering managers, elevating team performance and driving high-impact initiatives from inception to delivery. What You’ll Be Doing As a technical leader, you will bridge the gap between long-term strategic vision and high-performance engineering execution. You will champion engineering craft across the organization, mentoring senior talent and collaborating closely with cross-functional leadership to ensure high-quality architectural choices. Drive the technical direction, architecture, and strategy of backend services powering a global mobility platform. Eliminate systemic engineering bottlenecks, ensuring distributed systems remain highly available, secure, and resilient under massive global traffic. Lead complex initiatives from initial inception through technical specification to global delivery. Define engineering standards across the organization, beautifully balancing technical excellence with business requirements. Moderate critical technical discussions and partner directly with global leaders to build seamless API integrations. Provide expert guidance and mentorship to senior engineers, fostering a blameless, growth-oriented culture. Scale the engineering ecosystem by actively participating in leadership recruiting efforts for senior talent. What They’re Looking For The ideal candidate is a visionary builder with a product-oriented mindset and a deep-seated curiosity for modern engineering practices. You excel at translating complex technical architecture into clear, actionable strategy for stakeholders across the entire business. Essential Capabilities Backend Ecosystem Expertise: Advanced, expert-level knowledge of Scala, Java, or related JVM languages. Distributed Systems Mastery: A proven track record of designing and delivering large-scale microservices in high-volume environments. Architectural Fluency: Event-driven architecture experience, alongside deep knowledge of modern software design patterns and highly available systems. Production Datastores: Strong hands-on experience with foundational technologies like MySQL and PostgreSQL. Agile & DevOps Fluency: Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines, TDD/BDD, automated workflows, and rapid deployment cycles. Core Fundamentals: Strong computer science skills, backed by an educational foundation or equivalent deep professional expertise. Nice to Have Experience with container technologies and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) techniques. Deep domain knowledge working with complex third-party API integrations or e-commerce platforms. Familiarity with the wider ecosystem: TypeScript, React, Snowflake, AWS, Git, GitHub, Copilot, or Datadog. Curiosity for emerging AI technologies to enhance developer productivity or consumer experiences.
