Position: Medical Staff Specialist 1–5 / Senior Specialist (Acute Medical Unit) – Part Time (Permanent)

About the Role
Position Overview
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 7-day-per-week short-stay unit offering timely, evidence-based, and holistic care during the admission phase of adult medical inpatient care. It provides:
- Early senior medical and multidisciplinary input for admissions under internal medicine units.
- A dedicated space for work-up of patients with acute undifferentiated medical conditions.
- Physician-led care with specialised medical, nursing, allied health, and support staff to ensure patients receive comprehensive management plans on entry.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Acute and General Medicine (or relevant sub-specialties) under hospitals-hour for patients requiring admission analysis and intervention.
- Lead a multidisciplinary team – collaborating with Advanced/Basic Physician Trainees, Resident Medical Officers (RMO), and Allied Health.
- Ensure early intervention in complex medical cases, bridging the gap between emergency care and inpatient management.
- Support Credentialing Assessment Committee and continuous quality improvement in clinical practice.
- Teaching Opportunities: Mentor trainees and contribute to medical education while upholding public sector standards (AJPAC Section 21).
- Optional conjoint position with ANU* (academic opportunities without additional remuneration; subject to performance evaluation).
* Conjoint position dependent on qualifications, experience, and employment with Canberra Health Services.

This role is based at Canberra Hospital’s state-of-the-art Building 5 – the largest healthcare project in ACT history (44,000sqm, nine-story facility), offering:

Description of Work
Establishing a new AMU to reduce delays in admission assessments, HEMU to streamline resource allocation and preferable supportive scenarios for staggering acute admissions and scripting patient education with public health partnerships. Regular handover to ward team and interconsultations to General Medicine/acute internal medicine to ensure high-quality care.
Selection Criteria
Applications must demonstrably address the following principles:

Medical Expertise
- Evidence of recent training and experience in Acute/General Medicine or cross-disciplinary sub-specialty intervention.
- Commitment to cohort interactions and evidence-based clinical pathways.

Team Collaboration
- Experience with multidisciplinary teams (including trainees, RMO nurses, and AHPs).
- A demonstrated ability to augment the hospital pathway efficiency and patient-centric clinical care.

Alignment with ANU Academic Program (if eligible)
- Academic suitability (メートル undergraduate impeccable, willingness to engage in postgraduate activities, evidently derived from educational experience).
- Consistency in specialist Medical nursing-learning and encouragement of patient-focused preventive medical-modelled practice.

Professional Responsibility
- Adherence to relevant professional keys standards as per your college expeciation.
- Ongoing quality improvement and adherence to hospital ATP standards and subspecialties.
Additional Requirements
Prior to Commencement: ✔ MDAAC-approved Scope of Practice ✔ Current Specialist Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) ✔ National Police Clearance Check ✔ Full Occupational Screening including (! Advocatic Adv.) Vaccination Policy compliance
What We Offer

- Pay and Superannuation:
- Salary Package (Inclusive Salaries) base of: $344,062 (1F) to $453,341 (5G) inclusive pro rata for part time. - Base salary components: $204,936 – $274,696 - Plus on-call allowance (17.5%), superannuation (12.5%), Private Practice allowance, professional allowances match, mobile phone.
- 5 weeks unpaid Hospital Leave + 4 weeks training Events per annum
- Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Concessions via salary packaging (e.g. defensors spending, gym assort).
- Investment options through Canberra’s health grant network: Enhanced provisions (Eligible, up to 4 weeks leave and post-graduate training purposes).

Qualifications and Experience
To be considered successful applicants must excel in (and beyond ):
✔ Postgraduate Fellowship in Internal/exchange medicine (with Demonstrated skills in Acute Medicalαιν ταχχόζ).
✔ Active, certified specialist registration
✔ Background admissalach on credentialing and MDAOAC.
