Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that embolds living.
Smith + Nephew’s Advanced Wound Management (AWM) division is seeking a passionate, experienced Engineer to join our Systems Testing Team—as part of a pivotal mission to shape and redefine possibilities in wound care through innovative digital and electromechanical solutions.
About the Role
The position is for a Staff Systems Test Engineer, reporting directly to the AWM R&D Systems Test Manager. As a key player, you will design, develop, and execute comprehensive system-level testing, verification, and validation strategies across the entire product lifecycle. Collaborating closely with cross-functional and internal/external stakeholders, you will:
- Generate and implement test strategies and planning frameworks, aligning with device development milestones.
- Develop and validate low-power microcontroller testing environments, including wireless technologies (BLE, Zigbee, NFC, UWB, NB-IoT, LTE-M).
- Evaluate, build, and tailor automated and manual frameworks for effective medical device integration testing.
- Foster deep technical expertise through close work with system engineers, hardware designers, and software developers.
- Lead/participate in global test efforts as a senior-level resource, ensuring structure across virtual and on-site teams.
Within this role, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring compliance with stringent medical device standards (ISO 13485, IEC 62304, FDA, and MDR). You’ll also drive productivity improvements and test efficiency strategies, forecasting resource needs, and communicating shuttle logistics to stakeholders—including your ability to liaise with Clinical, Design/Usability, Manufacturing, and Regulatory Teams, especially regarding requirement compliance.
Responsibilities
-
Strategy & Planning:
- Own or support system-level test strategies from concept to validation, ensuring rigorous coverage of requirements and hazards.
- Develop and refine automated and manual test procedures to support all design validation tasks.
-
Test Environment Development:
- Create and validate testing environments for battery-panelled, low-power, wireless products.
- Support stakeholder collaboration to define and build functional test capabilities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
