Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join our Manufacturing Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, development, commissioning, and delivery of manufacturing control systems to ensure production-ready equipment interfaces across automated manufacturing facilities.
This role requires extensive experience with Siemens PLCs, industrial automation, robotics integration, CNC programming, and manufacturing execution systems (MES). Experience within the automotive or propulsion manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, coordination, implementation, and delivery of manufacturing control systems for new and existing production equipment.
- Develop and maintain control system standards that support production-ready equipment interfaces.
- Collaborate closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and IT teams to ensure seamless integration of manufacturing systems.
- Diagnose complex automation issues and provide technical expertise for root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
- Develop, maintain, and update Technical Standards, Project Books, and Manufacturing System Specifications in accordance with Bill of Process (BoP), global operating procedures, and quality standards.
- Design and maintain interfaces between shop floor PLCs, industrial applications, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Commission, validate, and support machine monitoring systems, quality systems, and automated production equipment.
- Support installation, testing, launch, and continuous improvement of manufacturing control systems.
- Evaluate, develop, and qualify new equipment suppliers while ensuring compliance with company engineering standards.
- Ensure all manufacturing equipment complies with UK/EU machinery safety legislation and industry standards.
- Conduct machinery risk assessments and implement safeguarding solutions for automated production equipment.
- Support industrial Ethernet network configuration and troubleshooting within manufacturing environments.
- Work alongside cross-functional engineering teams to improve manufacturing efficiency, reliability, and automation performance.
- Provide technical documentation, training, and ongoing engineering support where required.
- Undertake additional engineering responsibilities as assigned by the Engineering Manager.

Required Skills & Experience
Essential
- Siemens PLC programming and troubleshooting experience (mandatory).
- Extensive experience with PLC programming in industrial manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of industrial robotics integration and automation systems.
- Experience with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming methods.
- Strong understanding of machine electrical systems and industrial control panel design.
- Experience commissioning automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience integrating PLCs with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Practical experience with machine monitoring and quality systems.
- Strong understanding of Industrial Ethernet networks including Profinet, Ethernet/IP or similar technologies.
- Good understanding of IT infrastructure and industrial network architectures.
- Proven experience conducting machinery risk assessments.
- Excellent knowledge of UK/EU Machinery Safety Regulations and applicable standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with structured root cause analysis experience.
- Ability to manage multiple projects within demanding manufacturing environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration abilities.

Preferred Experience
- Automotive manufacturing experience.
- Propulsion or powertrain manufacturing experience.
- Experience working in highly automated production facilities.
- Knowledge of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Experience supporting equipment installation and production launch activities.
- Supplier development and equipment acceptance experience.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Equivalent industrial experience will also be considered.
