Clinical Physiotherapist (Stroke Rehabilitation) – Abingdon Community Hospital
About the Role
The Clinical Physiotherapist (Stroke Rehabilitation) will work within Abingdon Community Hospital’s specialist stroke inpatient rehabilitation team in Oxfordshire. This role focuses on empowering clients to manage their conditions effectively, maximise their potential, and achieve goals in self-management, environmental access, and return to previous occupations and community life.
Reporting to the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, the post holder will deliver a high-quality rehabilitation service in alignment with current best evidence-based practice, working within the Oxfordshire stroke pathway.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Team Delivery
- Provide individualised, client-centred rehabilitation for stroke patients, including complex cases.
- Conduct detailed clinical assessments using clinical reasoning to inform personalised treatment plans.
- Design, deliver, and review rehabilitation programmes based on clinical findings, national guidelines, and best practice principles.
- Work independently to manage and prioritise caseloads, ensuring patient needs are met efficiently.
- Regularly communicate with senior physiotherapists for supervision, risk escalation, and best practice alignment.
Patient-Centred Care
- Collaborate with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to set patient-centred goals and discharge plans.
- Adapt communication to patients with cognitive, sensory, or communication impairments.
- Ensure dignity, autonomy, and safeguarding are upheld, adhering to legislation such as the Mental Capacity Act.

Safety and Risk Management
- Maintain clear and accurate clinical records.
- Ensure safe use, cleaning, and maintenance of rehabilitation equipment (e.g., walking aids, electrotherapy devices, gym equipment and hydrotherapy).
- Manage clinical risks, including exposure to bodily fluids and challenging behaviours, with robust safeguarding practices.
Professional Development and Accountability
- Maintain ongoing competence through:
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Mandatory training
- Reflective practice
- Update professional portfolio and participate in annual appraisals.
- Actively support student placement learning, unregistered staff, and colleagues through coaching, mentoring, and team collaboration.
Qualifications Required
- Full registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Qualification equivalent to Degree-level in Physiotherapy (RCPTB/HEEAURB accredited).
- Clinical experience in stroke rehabilitation OR patient-assessed relevant experience.
Desirable (if applicable):
- Experience working in capital stroke services in acute or nurse-led environments.
- Sakita or equivalent (stroke specialist training).
