Strategic Growth Director – Business Development and Client Engagement – Sustainability, Earth and Environment

About the Role

At WSP, you could achieve impactful, fulfilling work on landmark projects while working alongside pioneering professionals. This role in Earth, Environment and Sustainability is designed for a strategic thinker, relationship builder and growth leader who thrives in a dynamic environment where sustainability, resilience and multidisciplinary solutions intersect to create lasting change.

You will:

  • Shaping, coordinating, and delivering structured business development and client engagement for the Earth, Environment and Sustainability portfolio.
  • Bridging client needs, sector strategy, technical expertise, and work-winning efforts across established and emerging markets.
  • Leading client-centred programmes that strengthen relationships and improve pipeline quality.
  • Acting as a key interface between clients, internal leaders, marketing, bids teams, and technical specialists.

Key Responsibilities

Client Engagement & Relationship Development

  • Develop and maintain a structured engagement programme for priority corporate clients and sectors, aligned with growth priorities.
  • Build deep relationships with executives, procurement leads and technical decision-makers, ensuring sustained access to influence buying decisions.
  • Act as a liaison for client feedback, ensuring insights improve delivery confidence and future positioning.
  • Raise profile of Earth, Environment and Sustainability propositions through:
    • Campaigns
    • Thought leadership pieces
    • Client briefings and events

Pipeline Growth & Business Development

  • Identify and qualify new opportunities in existing, adjacent, and emerging markets where the portfolio can deliver integrated responses in sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental planning.
  • Collaborate with bidding teams on early positioning, value proposition development, and strategic pursuit plans for priority opportunities.
  • Turn client insights and technical capability into tangible growth levers.

Cross-Selling & Portfolio Coordination

  • Facilitate cross-selling Earth, Environment and Sustainability capabilities with wider firm services to address complex client challenges.
  • Ensure coherence between growth, account, marketing, and delivery teams across a matrix organisation.

Analytics & Impact Measurement

  • Drive a disciplined process for tracking and acting on pipeline health, win themes, and client feedback.
  • Provide insightful reporting on engagement trends, opportunity progression, and market positioning.

Key Requirements

  • Strategic mindset: Ability to translate portfolio strategy into actionable business development initiatives.
  • Senior relationship orientation: Experience managing contractor-executive-level dialogues and influencing decisions at senior levels.
  • Breadth of capability: Knowledge of Environment, Sustainability, Planning, Digital Solutions and their intersection in client challenges.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Experience working with bid teams, technical experts, marketing, and senior management.
  • Analytical focus: Skills in qualifying opportunities, gathering client insights, and developing data-driven propositions.

What Success Looks Like

  • Engagement: Active plans with priority clients (relationship maps, stakeholder touchpoints, kPIs), reviewed quarterly.
  • Pipeline: Enhanced quality and visibility of strategic pursuits, with alignment to portfolio and market plans.
  • Feedback: A structured process reporting on client insight and improving delivery performance.
  • Market profile: Expanded recognition of Earth, Environment and Sustainability as thought leaders and consistent differentiators.
  • Reporting: Consistent growth metrics on client interaction, proposals, andipoype, reporting with CRM/data integration.
