Join us as our Strategic PR & Communications Manager – Maritime

This is a senior, client-facing role for a proactive PR and communications specialist with strong maritime, offshore or energy sector knowledge. The role combines strategic communications counsel with hands-on delivery across media relations, content, thought leadership, events, reporting and client programme management.

As Strategic PR & Communications Manager, you will lead retained and project-based client communications activity, acting as both adviser and delivery lead. Client work will be the core focus, with additional support for Wake Media-owned channels and occasional Marketing in Maritime (MiM) initiatives where required.

You will help clients build profile, manage reputation and communicate clearly with specialist trade, industry and commercial audiences. You will also line manage a direct report, coordinate freelancers and external contributors, and ensure work is delivered to a high standard across multiple deadlines and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & PR

  • Lead the creation and delivery of integrated communications strategies aligned to client objectives, audiences and commercial priorities.
  • Act as a trusted communications adviser, providing counsel on messaging, positioning, reputation, campaign direction and crisis communications when required.
  • Manage press office activity including press releases, statements, comments, feature ideas, approvals, distribution and media follow-up.
  • Identify proactive PR opportunities and develop strong story angles that support client visibility and market positioning.
  • Ensure PR activity is integrated with content, events, digital marketing and wider campaign activity.

Media Relations & Industry Profile

  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, publishers, media partners, event organisers and industry stakeholders.
  • Secure relevant, high-quality coverage across maritime, offshore, energy and B2B industrial media.
  • Coordinate and prepare media interviews with executives, technical specialists and subject-matter experts.
  • Support thought leadership placement through contributed articles, interviews, comment opportunities, awards and speaking platforms.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the industry events and media landscape, bringing an opportunity-led approach to PR and networking.

Content, Thought Leadership & Editorial

  • Write, shape and edit high-quality communications content including press releases, opinion pieces, features, blogs, case studies, abstracts and campaign messaging.
  • Translate technical or specialist subject matter into clear, compelling narratives for media, client, industry and commercial audiences.
  • Review and sign off content to ensure accuracy, tone, quality and consistency.
  • Coordinate feedback between clients, internal teams, freelancers and external contributors.
  • Align content with PR, events, SEO, newsletters, owned channels and wider marketing objectives.

Events, Speaker Coordination & Networking

  • Identify, secure and coordinate relevant speaker, panel, awards and conference opportunities for clients.
  • Write and adapt abstracts, award entries, speaker proposals, biographies and supporting materials.
  • Liaise with organisers and stakeholders to manage deadlines, requirements and logistics.
  • Advise clients on event participation, speaker positioning and opportunities to maximise profile and commercial value.
  • Represent Wake Media at client meetings, industry events, exhibitions and networking opportunities, with willingness to travel in the UK and internationally when required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
