Transportation Authority Internship Program
The Transportation Authority has paid internship positions for students who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and excited about making a meaningful contribution to San Francisco's transportation system.
Due to the small size of our agency and our dedication to learning from each other, interns will have the opportunity to interact with professionals at all levels within the Transportation Authority, from your peers to the senior managers. Our staff will work with each intern to develop a program that is tailored to individual strengths and interests, as well as the current needs of our teams. Internships can be combined with general research opportunities or research towards a thesis.
Strategy and Technology Policy Internship Overview
The Strategy and Technology Policy team leads a range of initiatives, including in the areas of innovative mobility, transportation strategy, organizational development, and agency partnerships. The team is currently working on several initiatives, including autonomous vehicle (AV) policy development, planning for new mobility, agency strategic planning, and major infrastructure funding and governance. Our work program also includes strategy support to other major initiatives and policy, planning, and funding efforts.
Employee Type: Intern/Temporary Employee
Availability: Interns should be available to work at least 20 hours per week during regular business hours, for at least a 12-week period of time. Preference will be given to applicants who are available for at least 6 months. Please note availability in cover letter.

Compensation Range: $25 – $32 per hour (depending on experience)
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong interest in urban transportation planning is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
- Proficiency with ArcGIS, database management, graphic design software, and/or statistical analysis is desired.
Skills And Abilities
- Standard transportation planning principles, methods, and processes
- Basic research methods, survey design, and database management techniques
- Ability to interpret data using appropriate planning methods and statistical techniques
- Familiarity with land use planning methods
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to prepare and present written reports and recommendations
Additional relevant skills and abilities are also encouraged. These include experience with travel demand modeling, traffic modeling, project funding, and/or civil engineering.
Training and Experience
- Prospective interns should have at least completed a bachelor’s degree.
- Preferred candidates will have completed at least one semester in a relevant master’s degree program (e.g. transportation planning, urban planning, civil engineering).
- Candidates with only a bachelor’s degree will be considered if they have transportation planning experience.
