East Staffordshire Borough Council

Street Cleaning Operative (Barrows/Labourer)

Grade 3 – £24,796 to £25,989 per annum

Help keep East Staffordshire clean, safe and welcoming — every street, every space, every day.

About Us

East Staffordshire Borough Council is committed to making the Borough a clean, safe and attractive place to live, work and visit. As the Principal Litter Authority, our Street Cleaning team plays a vital front-line role in maintaining highways, footpaths, public open spaces and local communities.

Using a mix of manual cleansing, practical equipment and modern recording tools, the team tackles litter, detritus, dog fouling, fly tipping, leaves, weeds and other environmental issues with pride and professionalism.

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Street Cleaning Operative to join our busy Environment team. This is a hands-on, outdoor role where you will help keep the Borough looking its best by carrying out manual street cleansing across highways, public open spaces and other areas of the public realm.

Your work will include:

  • Removing litter, detritus, leaves, weeds, dog fouling, dead animals and fly tipping
  • Emptying and maintaining street litter bins
  • Collecting bulky waste where required
  • Separating recyclable materials
  • Reporting defects, incidents or health and safety concerns promptly
  • Using hand-held devices to record cleanliness levels, litter bin capacities and other service information.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
