About the Company:

Barry Honeysett Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers is a small consultancy producing high quality work from our office in central Exeter. The practice is busy with a solid workload on a wide variety of buildings and projects around the southwest of England and beyond. The practice specialises in the design of sustainable buildings including timber structures (glulam, oak and softwood) and vernacular buildings including those of earth walls (known locally as cob) but also provide structural engineering for masonry, steel and concrete structures.

About the Role:

We are currently offering an exciting full-time opportunity to an experienced structural engineer who is competent in the design of all regularly-used construction materials and building forms.

The ideal candidate will be working towards accreditation or will be accredited with the Institution of Civil Engineers or Structural Engineers with a minimum of 4 years of relevant post graduate experience. The candidate should be based in Exeter or willing to relocate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
