Title: Structures Design Engineer & Civil Designs Interface

Department: Engineering/Design Reports To: Design Project Manager Location: London/Birmingham


Key Responsibilities

As a Structures Design Engineer & Civil Designs Interface, your role will focus on coordinating and integrating interfaces between civil structures (viaducts, bridges, tunnels, and earthworks) and the Standard Slab Track system. You will collaborate closely with the Civils Design Integration Lead and the broader design teams to ensure seamless integration.

Core Duties:

  • Develop a deep understanding of structural and geotechnical behavior, including:
    • Movements of viaducts and bridges (temperature, long-term, transient effects)
    • Settlement and differential settlement impacts on track systems
    • Expansion joints, bearings, and articulation arrangements
    • Load transfer mechanisms between the slab track and supporting structures
  • Ensure that the slab track solution is well-coordinated, buildable, and aligned with project requirements.
  • Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams to resolve technical challenges.
  • Facilitate close collaboration with the Designer to deliver optimized, timely, and client-compliant designs.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the construction team, design team, and client.
  • Chair or attend meetings related to track design issues during design and construction, providing technical mitigation support.
  • Assist in identifying changes, risks, and opportunities, promoting efficiencies and cost savings.
  • Coordinate with commercial, planning, design delivery teams, and designers to optimize designs.
  • Support construction teams in managing track-related issues.
  • Provide technical input for contract administration and timely close-out of track slab issues.
  • Work closely with the instrumentation and monitoring team, reviewing reports and certificates.
  • Support progressive technical assurance during design, construction, and handover phases.

Key Responsibilities Revisited (Additional Focus Areas)

  • Coordinate slab track and civil structure interfaces, ensuring clear communication between disciplines.
  • Review structural movements, tolerances, and interface details, identifying risks or constraints for slab track integration.
  • Assist designers in ensuring compatibility between track elements and civil structures at critical interfaces.
  • Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and engineering workshops.
  • Prepare and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and interface registers.
  • Track interface issues and actions, facilitating timely resolutions with stakeholders.
  • Draft meeting minutes, coordination notes, and technical summaries to ensure clarity.
  • Contribute to buildability, safety, quality, and efficiency improvements at interfaces.
  • Support risk identification and reporting related to structure-track integration.
  • Align interface activities with program requirements, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Promote health, safety, and environmental awareness in all project aspects.
  • Travel to London and Birmingham for meetings with internal teams, partners, and clients as required.

Who Are We Looking For?

We seek a degree-qualified professional with expertise in civil engineering or a related discipline. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Career experience in civil engineering, structures, geotechnics, or infrastructure.
  • Desirable: CEng (Railway Engineer Institute or ICE) or progress toward relevancy.
  • Relevant expertise in rail track design, modeling, or construction support on large-scale projects.
  • Understanding of structural behavior, including movements and tolerances in bridges/viaducts.
  • Ability to read, interpret engineering drawings, and manage interface details.
  • Interest in design coordination, interface management, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Familiarity with interface processes (e.g., ICDs, risk registers, change management).
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn standards (e.g., Eurocodes, UK standards, HS2 standards).
  • Collaborative and strong communication skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, with ability to track multiple interfaces and actions.
  • Basic BIM/3D design tool awareness.
  • Professional, proactive approach when working with designers, partners, and stakeholders.
