About the Role
Job Title: Structures Design Engineer & Civil Designs Interface Department: Engineering/Design Reports to: Design Project Manager Location: London or Birmingham
Key Responsibilities
As a Structures Design Engineer & Civil Designs Interface, you will:
- Coordinate interfaces between civil structures (bridges, viaducts, tunnels, earthworks) and standard slab track systems, ensuring seamless integration with the design team.
- Analyse structural movements & tolerances—considering:
- Temperature, long-term, and transient effects in bridges/viaducts
- Differential settlement impacts on tracks
- Expansion joints, bearings, articulation arrangements
- Load transfer mechanisms between the slab track and structures
- Support design optimisation ensuring alignment with client requirements, cost, and efficiency.
- Closely liaise with:
- Railway consultants & subcontractors
- Internal cross-functional teams (commercial, planning, construction)
- Attend coordination meetings (weekly in London/Birmingham) and structure or review slab track interfaces during design/construction.
- Provide technical support for change/opportunity management and improving** buildability, safety, and cost-saving efficiencies.
- Support progressive technical assurance from design through handover.

Interface Management Duties:
- Track & resolve interface issues via ICDs, risk registers, and change management.
- Document coordination notes, meeting minutes, and technical summaries.
- Promote HSE considerations in all tasks.
Key Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional qualification (or ambition) towards:
- Membership of Railway Engineer Institute or ICE (CEng, MICE, etc.)
- Relevant experience in:
- Civil/structural design, geotechnics, or infrastructure projects.
- Rail track systems (preferred).
- ** Major infrastructure design** (including bridges, viaducts).
- Needs to demonstrate understanding of:
- Structural movements, tolerance management, and interface documentation.
- Eurocodes, UK projects, and HS2 standards (advantageous).

Technical & Soft Skills
- Familiarity with BIM/3D design tools (helpful, not mandatory).
- Multidisciplinary teamwork and proven ability to resolve technical challenges.
- Proactive attitude toward collaboration, reporting deviations, and continuous improvement.
- Good communication skills—minutes, presentations, and cross-team facilitation.
