Job summary
Are you an experienced nurse or midwife ready to develop your career within specialist community public health nursing? We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for registered nurses and/or midwives to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN - School Nursing) training programme, commencing January 2027.
This 12-month programme prepares practitioners for autonomous, preventative public health practice, focused on improving outcomes for children and families and reducing health inequalities across communities. Successful candidates are employed as valued members of our School Nursing Team, enabling them to develop the knowledge and skills required for safe, effective, and autonomous SCPHN practice.
This role is a community-based role with your duties being carried out between your base, home, and a range of community settings, for example, a school/family hub or trust site. We will be offering one post within the East Sussex School Health service, which covers the whole of East Sussex (except for Brighton & Hove). Our main base is in Polegate, which is where you will mainly work from during your training, but we also have a base in Hastings.

Main duties of the job
What will the role involve?
- Completing your SCPHN qualification in School Nursing
Your Daily Activities Will Be Varied To Include:
- Completing comprehensive health needs assessments to understand strengths, needs, and levels of support required and make timely onward referrals
- Managing a caseload of children and young people, prioritising need, and maintaining high-quality, person-centred care
- Delivering personalised packages of care, e.g., healthy weight, toileting, behaviour/parenting, emotional health, and well-being
- Promoting public health initiatives to support healthy lifestyles for children and young people and their families
- Providing support in the daily management of young people's texting service
- Focusing on the high-impact areas of the Healthy Child Programme, ensuring your practice aligns with national priorities and local guidance
- Safeguarding children and families, working collaboratively with partner agencies to identify concerns, take appropriate action, and contribute to robust safeguarding plans
- Leading on QI projects

Person Specification
Qualification
Essential:
- Registered Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Level 6 Degree or equivalent qualification, or equivalent knowledge acquired through experience plus a diploma in nursing
Experience
Essential:
- One year's experience of working as a Nurse or midwife
Knowledge and Skills
Essential:
- Able to be able to use IT systems and databases
- Knowledge of up-to-date clinical practice by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based procedures and clinical effectiveness frameworks
Desirable:
- Having an awareness of developments within the NHS
Abilities
Essential:
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people across organisational levels and sectors, including within areas of social deprivation
Working Environment
