Student Support Assistant

Student Support Assistant – Fixed Term (Up to 4 September 2027)

Part-time (31.25 hrs/week), Term-time only | £24,607 per annum (pro rata)

Reference: ACF/SS/009/26 Closing date: 19 July 2026

The Student Services department ensures SRUC students have access to tailored support throughout their journey. Core teams include:

  • Library Services

The Opportunity

An exciting fixed-term opportunity (up to 4 September 2027) has arisen for a Student Support Assistant—a critical role enhancing the College’s commitment to inclusive education.

Main Purpose

Assist students with additional needs in academic and social settings by:

  • Implementing Personal Learning Support Plans
  • Reinforcing skills, fostering integration, and promoting participation in the wider student community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Support

    • Provide one-to-one support during teaching activities, ensuring students access materials, equipment and information.
    • Assist with workload prioritisation, note organisation, and referring to specialist teams as needed.
  • Personalised Assistance

    • Accompany students during lunch breaks, field trips, or practical classes (both on and offsite).
    • Monitor behaviour, use agreed strategies (e.g., supported "time-outs"), and report concerns to senior staff.

  • Exam/Assessment Support

    • Assist assigned students during exams and assessments in line with their support plans.
  • Record-Keeping & Reporting

    • Maintain confidentiality anddata accuracy while collaborating with Student Support Tutors, Educations Support and Wellbeing Leads.
    • Contribute to case and team meetings as requested.

Work Environment

  • Primary setting: Classrooms (9 AM–5 PM, Monday–Friday).
  • Offsite tasks: Practical classes (outdoors, labs, workshops) or field trips (occasional, with advance notice).
  • Support schedule: Term-time only, rolling baton between trio of staff overseeing summer students.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree, Diploma or equivalent at SCQF Level 4 (e.g., care, support or education-related studies), or demonstrating active progression.
  • Proven background supporting individuals with additional needs/learning differences, particularly in formal or informal learning environments.
  • Strong verbal/written communication, exemplary literacy/numeracy, and IT proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, email).
  • Excellent teamwork, organisational skills, and proactive problem-solving.
  • Confidentiality, adaptability, and willingness to engage in staff training.

Desirable Experience

  • Further qualifications at SCQF Level 7 (e.g., HNC) in care, support, or education.
  • Specialised educational support experience (e.g., additional needs/disability adjustments).
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and awareness of Equality Act 2010 adjustments.
  • Understanding of physical/mental well-being challenges affecting students.
  • Acquaintance with structured approaches to neurodivergent or ASD-related needs.
