Student Wellbeing Officer (30hrs)

Department: Student Wellbeing


Location: East London (On-site)

Type of Contract: Permanent – Part Time – 30 hours per week

Shift Pattern:

  • Evenings and Weekends
    • Weekdays: 4–9pm
    • Saturdays: 10.00am–3.00pm

What The Team Do

The team:

  • Supports students’ well-being by offering help with:
    • Mental health
    • Personal issues
    • Practical concerns (e.g., housing or financing)
  • Provides guidance, crisis support, and promotes a safe, inclusive environment to help students succeed both personally and academically.

The Role

Your role will focus on:

  • Working in partnership with students to identify barriers to learning and provide ongoing support tailored to their unique needs.
  • Supporting student well-being to:
    • Enable them to manage social and emotional challenges.
    • Work alongside staff to provide optimal support to learners with health or welfare needs.
    • Help students maximise their study potential at GBS.

Key Responsibilities

The purpose of this role is to:

  • Provide guidance and support to GBS students throughout:
    • Their learning
    • Their well-being
    • Their study engagement
  • Address student welfare via pastoral care and guidance to appropriate services.

As a Student Welfare Officer, you will be an early point of contact for students seeking assistance with a variety of concerns. You must:

  • Know all services and academic offerings at GBS.
  • Be ready to refer students to:
    • Internal GBS teams.
    • External agencies.
  • Report directly to the Student Welfare Manager.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Case Management:

    • Handle student referrals alongside the Student Welfare Manager.
    • Act as a link between:
      • The Welfare Office.
      • Relevant academic teams.
      • Internal and external services.
  • Pastoral & Academic Support:

    • Provide emotional and practical pastoral support to students facing:
      • Social challenges.
      • Emotional challenges.
    • Ensure:
      • Learners with personalised learning plans receive the outlined accommodations.
      • Support is implemented effectively (including classroom considerations).

  • Attendance Strategy:

    • Collaborate with student engagement managers to maximise attendance.
  • Immediate Response:

    • Offer drop-in assistance on an appointment or ad-hoc basis.
  • Record-keeping & Compliance:

    • Maintain accurate student welfare documentation.
    • Hold and share records in compliance with GDPR.
  • Wellbeing Initiatives:

    • Assist in organising:
      • Health and well-being events.
      • Social activities for students.

Required Experience & Skills

Applicants should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, with strong preference for a health-related discipline.
  • Experience in adjacent or similar roles, with ideal prior work in higher education.

Knowledge and practical experience of:

  • Implementing guidelines from:
    • The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
    • The Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Act.
  • Understanding JCQ regulations on reasonable accommodations for students with learning differences and needs, including how to apply them.
  • Working with:
    • A range of physical disabilities.
    • Specific learning difficulties common in mainstream education, such as:
      • Dyslexia.
      • Dyspraxia.
      • Attention deficit disorders.
      • Asperger’s syndrome.

Additional competencies:

  • Technical skills:
    • Selecting and using assessment materials.
    • Scoring and converting raw results to derived scores.
    • Interpreting data to:
      • Draw evidence-based conclusions.
      • Recommend support strategies.
  • Soft skills:
    • Sensitivity in discussing student needs.
    • Ability to co-plan additional support programmes aligning with:
      • Personal goals.
      • Tutor targets.
