About

Candice Lau is an award-winning master leatherworker. She creates objects and products that celebrate the essence of the material and craftsmanship is utmost important in her practice. She is challenged to change the expectations of leatherwork, therefore she breaks convention by creating works of art that transform her craft. In combination with clay, her sculptural work is an amalgamation of these seemingly disparate materials. Altogether creating new outcomes from this material, and transforming her practice. Her extensive experience have attracted commissions of bags and accessories from clients including Toast, Bang and Olufsen, Heals, Lacoste and Hermes.

Process

To date, Candice has been awarded an Arts Council grant, Develop Your Creative Practice to help her develop her sculptural work. She has won a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, chosen as an ambassador for the John Smedley 235th anniversary, shortlisted for the Maker of the Year award with the Heritage Craft Association, and won the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers and Cockpit Arts award. She was also invited to Portugal to the Craftshub residency of bricks and tiles. Her training with the leather masters in Florence, Italy, combined with a previous career in design have resulted in three distinct collections of leather products and sculptures.
