Join our team at HMP YOI Doncaster, a Category B remand prison in the heart of Doncaster city centre.
This is an exciting opportunity to become a Substance Misuse Recovery Worker, working within our healthcare team to empower individuals formulated for change. Your work will focus on promoting health and well-being through substance misuse and alcohol recovery, making a tangible difference in patients' lives.
Key Details
Hours & Support
- Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Mon–Fri, 8:00am–4:00pm)
- Competitive salary: Up to £33,510 per annum
- Bespoke support: Including our Introducing Health in Justice training, competency frameworks, and career development opportunities via our Learning Management System
Select candidates must have the right to work in the UK with additional security vetting and checks.
What You’ll Be Doing
As the Substance Misuse Recovery Worker, your responsibilities will be varied and critical to patient recovery. Key duties include:
- Managing a caseload of psychosocial patients, addressing:
- Substance misuse
- Mental health challenges
- Trauma and complex needs
- Supporting new receptions (intakes), conducting assessments and triaging urgent cases
- Delivering health education, including:
- Overdose awareness and harm reduction strategies
- Motivation to change sessions
- Relapse prevention and wellbeing workshops
- SMART Recovery programs
- Facilitating peer-led recovery groups
- Offering comprehensive information on:
- Substance use disorders
- Alcohol cessation
- Smoking cessation
- Blood-borne viruses & safe sex practices
- Supporting patients during preparation for release and transfers
- Collaboration with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), encompassing:
- Prison-based support staff
- Probation services
- External drug and alcohol services

Requirements for Substance Misuse Recovery Worker:
- Proven experience in substance misuse, ideally within:
- Prison or secure environments
- A structured recovery worker / practitioner role
- Cross-disciplinary knowledge of:
- Housing, social care, healthcare, and mental health pathways
- Experience managing a caseload of high-needs clients
- Flexibility, resilience, and exceptional communication skills
- Strong connection with the NHS, prison, and community sectors
