We have an exciting opportunity for a Substance Misuse Recovery Worker to join our team at HMP Full Sutton near York. HMP Full Sutton is a Category A male prison with a capacity of around 600 inmates, offering a noteworthy, challenging, and unique environment to learn and develop.
Join the Recovery Team and empower individuals who wish to make lasting behavioural changes to promote health and well-being through recovery from drugs and alcohol.
This is a crucial role within the healthcare team, making a real difference to patients, and delivering outstanding care.
Hours
This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week, operating Monday to Friday across two shifts:
- 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Salary
Full-time salary ranges up to £33,510 per annum.

- Managing a caseload of psychosocial patients with complex needs, including substance misuse, mental health, or trauma histories
- Assessing and supporting new patients (receptions) with triage and comprehensive person-centred evaluations
- Delivering group sessions on:
- Overdose awareness
- Harm reduction strategies
- Motivational counselling
- Relapse prevention techniques
- Well-being promotion
- Leading SMART sessions, Narcotics Anonymous, Inside Out, and other recovery-oriented programmes
- Providing a personalised programme of psychosocial interventions and SMART Recovery-based therapy
- Offering detailed information and advice on:
- Substance misuse management
- Alcohol cessation strategies
- Smoking cessation support
- Engaging with blood-borne virus and sexual health education
- Safe sex practices
- Assisting patients through release and transfer processes

Ideal Candidate Profile
To succeed as our Substance Misuse Recovery Worker, you should have:
- Prior experience in substance misuse recovery, ideally within a prison/secure environment, and in a Recovery Worker/Practitioner role
- Experience working within a multi-disciplinary substance misuse framework, engaging across:
- Housing support
- Social care pathways
- Healthcare
- Mental health services
- Experience of managing and supporting diverse caseloads
- A flexible, adaptable approach
- Strong emotional intelligence and excellent communication skills
