Lead Electrical Substation Design Engineer

Role: Lead Electrical Substation Design Engineer Location: Across the UK Industry: Electricity Networks & Renewable Energy

Climate17 is partnering with a swiftly expanding specialist engineering consultancy in search of an experienced Lead Electrical Substation Design Engineer to spearhead grid connection and network infrastructure projects across the UK’s accelerating renewable energy sector.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a seasoned substation design engineer who thrives in technically demanding work, mentor junior engineers, and collaborates with clients to craft practical, high-calibre engineering solutions.


The Role

You will lead design and delivery for substation projects, with a special focus on 33kV and 132kV distribution networks, enabling high impact projects like:

  • Renewable energy expansions (solar PV, battery energy storage, onshore/offshore wind)
  • Grid connection and infrastructure enhancement

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading end-to-end substation design projects, from concept to detailed engineering
  • Producing and reviewing single-line diagrams, key-line diagrams, substation layouts, and elevations
  • Specifying primary plant equipment
  • Conducting engineering design reviews for compliance with UK standards and client briefs
  • Providing technical expertise for renewable energy grid connection projects
  • Engaging closely with clients, network operators, and key stakeholders
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers
  • Supporting or leading relevant power system studies

About You

Climate17 is seeking engineers with a proven track record demonstrating:

Core Experience & Skills

  • 5+ years’ experience within the UK’s electricity networks industry
  • Strong substation design experience (with preference for 33kV and/or 132kV)
  • Proficient AutoCAD skills with primary plant design experience
  • Experience specifying industry-standard primary equipment
  • Strong understanding of protection schemes, control philosophies, and interlocking strategies
  • Deep knowledge of UK transmission/distribution codes and standards
  • Design review competency & decision-making

Communication & Team Influence

  • Excellent technical report writing and verbal communication
  • Collaborative leader who mentees others and fosters professional growth

Education & Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field would be advantageous
