Substation Senior Project Manager

Grid Connection Project Manager | HV Transmission Infrastructure | UK

A major UK energy infrastructure developer is seeking a Grid Connection Project Manager to oversee large-scale transmission and substation connection projects across the UK.

This client-side delivery role focuses on managing major HV infrastructure works, including 400/275kV connections within National Grid / SSE substations. The successful candidate will act as the client representative, leading projects from early-stage planning and design through to construction, commissioning, and handover.

The position is based within a growing Grid Delivery function, providing exposure to essential UK energy infrastructure projects. The organisation has successfully delivered some of Europe’s largest battery storage projects, and the development pipeline continues to expand.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of HV substation and grid connection projects on behalf of the client
  • Manage interfaces with:
    • National Grid
    • NESO
    • DNOs
    • ICPs (Independent Connection Providers)
    • Contractors
    • Consultants
  • Oversee design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover activities
  • Drive programme performance, challenge delays, and ensure efficiency in project progression
  • Review and approve technical documentation, designs, and contractor deliverables
  • Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, HV safety protocols, and industry standards
  • Monitor and oversee:
    • Contractor performance
    • Site progress
    • Project risks
    • Reporting metrics
  • Support procurement activities, including tender evaluations and contract administration
  • Lead stakeholder meetings, site inspections, and project governance activities

Background Sought

  • Proven delivery experience in HV substation or transmission projects (132kV+)
  • Strong understanding of grid connection processes and TSO/DNO interfaces
  • Experience in:
    • Client-side, EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction), Principal Contractor, or Owner’s Engineer environments
    • National Grid infrastructure, frameworks, or transmission projects
  • Track record in delivering full schemes, including substations, SGTs (Substation Grid Transformers), or bay extensions
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and contractor coordination skills
  • Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (preferred)
  • APM (Association for Project Management), PRINCE2, or PMP (Project Management Professional) qualifications advantageous

The ideal candidate should come from a transmission contractor, EPC, utility, or grid infrastructure background and have a track record of owning complex infrastructure delivery.


Package Offered

  • Base salary: £90,000 - £100,000
  • Strong bonus potential: Up to 50%
  • Hybrid working arrangement
